Evening of Confessions

Kaoru sighed deep and eyed the pile of movies he had in the middle of the floor in his living-room. He tried to go through the dvds, intending on picking one that he would want to watch with the younger guitarist of his band. At first he had thought it would be an easy task, since they liked the same kind of movies, but it proved to be much harder in the end. Not because he couldn’t pick one, but because his thoughts tended to drift off to Die all the time.

He wasn’t really suffering in the waves of the greatest love of the century, at least not yet, but he definitely was attracted to the younger man, and definitely more than he had been attracted to anyone before. However, he wasn’t ready to do anything about the matter just yet. He had dropped some subtle hints, trying to make the redhead realize what was going on, but there hadn’t at least been any visible results. Maybe the younger guitarist was simply too dumb to notice. Or then he didn’t care.

Their friendship was doing well though. There hardly was an evening they wouldn’t do something together, either with the whole band or just the two of them. Maybe play some cards, go drinking or watch tv. It didn’t really matter, the quality time with their friends was the important thing.

This was one of those evenings, when they had agreed to meet just the two of them, since the others were busy somewhere else. Die had agreed to fetch some food, and Kaoru had promised to pick a movie, and then they’d meet later on at the older one’s apartment. Kaoru knew he wouldn’t have to wait for the other to be on time, and as they had agreed to meet at six, he inwardly changed it to seven in his mind. And he was right, almost exactly at 7 pm he heard a knock on his door.

Obviously Die had gone for some Chinese, as he had several small boxes in his hands as he stood there on Kaoru’s doorstep. “May I come in?” The older guitarist smiled at the dumb question, opening the door wider to let his friend in. He had never told Die ‘no’, but still the younger man asked every single time if he could come in or not. Somehow it had become a habit, that neither one of them wanted to break anymore.

They walked to the kitchen, where Die put the food on the table and turned to face the other. He was smiling, but Kaoru could tell it was a nervous smile. There just was something in the way Die’s eyes were slightly widened and the smile was a bit crooked. So he just stood there silently, waiting for what was to come. It definitely meant that Die had something he wanted to talk about.

The room was silent for a moment, and Die only looked down at the floor, trying to organize his thoughts. Finally he raised his gaze to face the older man, utterly serious expression on his face. “I really need to say this, okay…” He started, stuttering slightly. ”You know, it’s like you are a candle, and I’m dry paper or something like that. And if I come too close, I’ll catch the fire and I’ll be gone.”

Kaoru stared at Die for a moment, stunned. His mouth was hanging slightly open and his eyes were open wide, and he displayed quite probably the most surprised expression in the world’s history. Then suddenly he burst out laughing. He laughed and laughed until he rolled on the floor and tears were flowing down his cheeks. “Hehe, Die, hehe, that’s so… lame!” He rose up to a seated position and wiped away a tear from the corned of his left eye. “Really, Die, that was the worst metaphor I’ve ever heard! Where in hell did you pick it? It sucks.”

The redhead pouted and tried to hide his hands behind his back, shifting nervously where he was standing. “I made it up myself… ” He mumbled, blushing slightly. Then a rebellious glint appeared visible in his eyes, and he decided he needed to defend himself. “But, Kao, I’m trying to be serious here! Do you start to giggle like that every time someone confesses to love you?”

Kaoru suppressed a small fit of laughter by biting his lip. “No. But no one else uses that kind of crappy metaphors either.” Die turned his back slightly to the bandleader. “Now you hurt my feelings. I hope you’re proud of yourself.” He said it in a joking manner, but something in his tone told that he actually meant it. The pink haired man stopped laughing and stared at the other’s back. Did the redhead actually get mad? Kaoru frowned. He hadn’t meant to be evil, the situation had just been too hilarious.

Then it struck him like the lightning strikes from the clouds. “Do you start to giggle like that every time someone confesses to love you?” Confesses to love me? He stared at the rhythm guitarist’s back, and this time his expression was even more stupid and surprised than his previous one. Die loved him? That couldn’t be true… There was no way. They were best friends, yes, but that was it. That had always been it. But did it mean it always should be it?

Silently Kaoru moved closer to the other man, raising his hand to touch the other’s shoulder. “Die…” His voice was silent, but it cut through the silence like a knife. “What did you just say?” He let his hand stay on Die’s shoulder, as the younger man didn’t shrug it off. The question was somewhat stupid since he knew perfectly well what Die had said. He just refused to believe it.

The rhythm guitarist turned his head to look at the older man. “You heard me.” Kaoru had expected his voice to be harder, even angrier, but there was something oddly soft in Die’s voice. It left him speechless again, and he only could stare dumbly. “I see…” As the lead guitarist didn’t react in any other way, Die got frustrated and sighed deep while shaking his head. “Just forget it.” He tried to leave the room, but Kaoru slid his hand lower from his shoulder to grab his upper arm.

“Don’t leave like that.” Kaoru’s voice was silent again, but it forced Die to stop like he had walked into a brick wall. He remained standing where he was, even turning his head slightly to make their gazes meet again. The redhead wanted to ask why, why he shouldn’t leave that way. But then he decided against it and only waited patiently.

The bandleader cleared his throat, beginning to speak silently. “You really mean what you said?” It was more like a statement than a question, since he knew the younger man too well. Die hardly ever said things he didn’t mean, especially things as important as this. “I’m sorry I laughed at you, I really am.” He looked the other straight in the eye, smiling honestly. “And I’m glad that you told me.”

He had no idea if it would work. It might be the real thing, the relationship of their lives, or then it might only be a short affair, resulting in their friendship turning into something bad in the end. All that Kaoru knew was that he wanted to give it a try. The feelings he had developed for the redhead were definitely worth trying, and he honestly wanted to take the next step.

“I would be honoured if you’d share a romantic dinner with me tonight.” The lead guitarist smiled a bit dumbly at his own offer, but although it might’ve sounded odd it made Die smile too. The younger man stepped closer, looking deep into the other’s eyes. “That was most probably the best suggestion you have ever made.” With that he leaned closer, pressing a soft kiss in the corner of Kaoru’s mouth.

The older guitarist moved his head slightly so that their lips were properly against each other and softly deepened the connection. Maybe it would work. At that moment they both had a definite feeling that it would.
