Nightly Surprise
”Man, Kaoru, thanks for letting us crash at your place!” Toshiya both looked and sounded truly thankful, even a little embarrassed as he scratched the back of his head. He was still a little bewildered, the shock only fading slowly. He still wasn’t quite so sure what the hell had happened. Last night when he went to bed, it had all been perfectly normal: Die had been complaining about how cold it was, he had still insisted on keeping the bedroom window open and finally they had both settled on it when he had promised Die to keep him warm if the window could stay like that.
Then, somewhere in the middle of the night…
Suddenly Toshiya woke up to a strange noise. Instantly his heart was beating like mad, and hastily he shook Die awake, too, lowering his voice as he hissed straight into his ear. “Die… Die! Can you hear that?” The only answer he gained was a sleepy mumble, the guitarist trying to blink his eyes open. It was obvious Die wasn’t really in this world right now, his mind still somewhere in the pleasant dreams he’d been having, for once. Toshiya decided it was the time for more drastic measures and again he shook the other man, a bit harder, grabbing his shoulders tight. “Die, c’mon! There is someone in the apartment!”
That now had Die awake in an instant, his eyes flying wide and the sleep escaping him in record speed. “Someone? Where?” Together they decided it was the time to go and see what it could be. Or who. Probably some burglar that had come to steal his precious comic-book collection, Toshiya thought inwardly, while Die was already worrying over his precious guitars and cursing the fact he let them stay in the working room instead of bringing them to bed with him. Die got up and slipped into a pair of boxers, trying to rummage through the closet quickly for something to use as a weapon.
For a second Toshiya watched that but then snorted, shaking his head. “Are you trying to find a long scarf so you can strangle the burglar to death?” He asked, unable to keep the mocking tone off his voice. Although at the same time he thought it was incredibly cute… and actually even kind of hot how Die was ready to defend them, even in such a ridiculous manner. And dressed only in boxers, which made – even at a moment like this – Toshiya’s eyes wander downwards to the almost nonexistent curve of his butt.
The question made Die purse his lips and he shot the other man a glare over his shoulder. “What were you going to do then?” He arched one of his perfectly plucked eyebrows. “Scare him to death by appearing there stark naked like that?” He gave the other man a pointed look, allowing his gaze to linger down around his crotch for a good while. “I’m sorry, baby, but you’re not that impressive.”
Now it was Toshiya’s turn to frown, very disapprovingly. “Hey! It’s not like I’m trying to scare anyone with it! Although,” the frown made way for a dirty, ambiguous grin and there was no mistaking the deep sparkle in his eyes, “it did make you scream last night, alright. Several times.”
That was the perfect way to shut Die up and he blushed, pressing his lips into a tight line. For a second he just looked straight at the younger man, before sighing in deep. “Alright, alright, you win. Just take something you can defend us with, okay?” Toshiya agreed, nodding to show it, as it definitely could be a burglar and then they should be prepared. He received another row of complaints from Die when he opened the bedside drawer and dug out the big, horrendously green vibrator they had gotten from Kyo one Christmas. The one that looked like you could knock someone unconscious with it. But that was exactly the reason he took it along, it was better than Die’s plan to strangle the intruder at least!
They were too scared to turn on the lights, and besides it would alarm the burglar and chase him away. Which, arguably, might be a good thing, too, since neither of them wanted to meet the intruder really. The sounds seemed to be coming from the bathroom and now that they approached it, it sounded like water was running, fast. Die stopped on his tracks, looking at the other man with a suspicious frown. “Is the burglar taking a shower or what?” He asked in a low whisper, but Toshiya could only answer with a shrug and a low “let’s find out!”
They nodded at each other, counted to three under their breath. Then Die practically slammed the door open and Toshiya jumped into the bathroom with a loud war-cry that echoed off the walls.
The next second there was a huge, roaring sound and splashes everywhere, masses of water washing over them. Soon Die and Toshiya were both trying to collect themselves, sitting in knee-deep water right there on the floor and staring at each other.
A few hours later this conversation was taking place, Kaoru listening to their explanations with a sceptical, surprised look on his face. “So… it was just the pipes?” He asked after Die had finished the long-winded explanation about how everything had happened that night. The younger of the guitarists nodded hastily, several times, in an attempt to underline his answer. “Yes! I have no idea how they can just explode like that! But the whole apartment is now filled with water and we called the plumbing company and they’re doing emergency measures to save the place but we’re still not allowed in there for at least four weeks and we have to find another place to stay and it will cost a small fortune and we can’t afford hotel-room for such a long time and we have to – ”
He didn’t get any further than that before Toshiya wordlessly grabbed his arm and yanked him close to crush their lips together in a slow kiss. Die mewled a little, his eyes falling shut, and once they parted again he was silent, just smiling a little dreamily. Toshiya gave Kaoru an apologetic grin and a small one-shouldered shrug. “Sorry, man. That’s the only effective way to shut him up when he gets like that.”
Kaoru waved aside, it wasn’t like this was the first time he saw something like that, even though the two tried to act cool and behave when there were others around. “It’s all cool. You can stay here for a few nights, no problem. Weren’t you going to go home anyway for a few days now that it’s soon Christmas?”
That made Die nod and he shook himself back from the dream-lands and into reality. “Yeah. We’re visiting both, my parents and Toshiya’s. But I doubt they’ll keep us for a month, and we need to come back to get some work done, too. I – ” Toshiya gave Die a long look, and it was instantly recognized as ‘start babbling and I have to shut you up again’, even by Kaoru who jumped in to say something. “Let’s just see. It’s five am and I’d prefer having some sleep now, okay? You can turn the couch into a bed and dig out linen and blankets from the closet. You know where everything is. I’m going to go to bed.”
He left and it didn’t take long before Die and Toshiya were lying side by side on the small-couch-turned-into-a-bad-bed. They had to try and keep as still as possible, since every little movement made it creak and it felt like the springs were just about ready to drill their way through skin into someone’s back. It was dark and silent for a good while, but then finally Die’s voice broke the silence as he spoke up lowly. “What a shitty Christmas.”
That got Toshiya’s attention and he shifted, turning to face the other man to look at him in the darkness. It made something poke him between his ribs, though, and he groaned a little bit before he managed to find another spot to lie on that felt better. “Hey, it’s not like it’s gonna be that shitty. We’ll still go visit our folks and we’ll figure this out. We’re only temporarily homeless.”
Die couldn’t help but to snort a bit. “Temporarily homeless. Doesn’t sound all that thrilling.” He appreciated the attempt, though, since he knew that Toshiya was trying to make him feel better. He shifted as well, cursing at the creaking bed as he got closer. Finally he managed to lean in and press his forehead against Toshiya’s shoulder, and when Toshiya wrapped a long arm around him in turn, he didn’t feel quite that bad anymore. “Maybe we find a cheap hotel for a few weeks?” He suggested lowly, his breath hitting the bassist’s skin as he was so close.
“I thought so, too. Man, we definitely can’t stay here! This so-called bed is already killing me,” Toshiya laughed, and only too late realized he should try to hush it as Kaoru was sleeping in the next room. “It’s not like we need a five-star hotel. Let’s find something good but decently priced.” The only answer he gained was a slow nod from Die, who was obviously thinking of it, too.
Another short silence landed amongst them and for a while it almost seemed like they were both already asleep. Then suddenly Die chuckled, almost hysterically. “Just imagine if it had been a burglar! He would’ve died of laughter when you jumped into the room, naked and armed with a vibrator, screaming like a modern Tarzan!”
Okay, that was an amusing thought, and Toshiya couldn’t help but to laugh. “Hey, at least it would’ve been a memorable moment for him! It’s not like everyone gets to see me naked and screaming.”
Grinning against Toshiya’s skin, Die nodded. “True. But if you ever scream like that in bed with me, I’m going to put you on celibacy for a week.”
“You wouldn’t…”
“Okay I wouldn’t.”
Toshiya laughed, and this time he remembered to keep his voice down.
