Of Ice Skating and Romantic Movies
Toshiya had no idea what had suddenly possessed Die to this. Usually he was the one who got sudden urges and decided at 4 am that he needed to get out, dragged Die out to dance in the snow or woke him up to watch some stupid morning shows together with him. He was the one to act on an impulse, and under normal circumstances Die was the one to follow him more or less obediently. Sometimes, the situation was reversed though. Now was one of those times.
It had been a completely normal, slow Sunday morning and they had spent it in bed, lying there lazily until it was late in the afternoon already. Then suddenly, completely out of the blue, Die had said he wanted to go skating. Toshiya had stared at him dumbfounded from huge eyes but there had been no other explanation attached, only the demand to go skating repeated again urgently.
So they got dressed, making sure they had warm enough clothes for the weather, and soon were already on their way. Turned out Die hadn’t only dragged him out to get skating but it was a special happening, the huge outside ice ring reserved for some girl scout group that was now selling tickets and coloured ribbons to a large crowd of people. There was a separate line for men and women, and everyone who bought a ticket got one of those ribbons and could rent a pair of skates if they wished.
Frowning, Toshiya already turned to ask Die for an explanation, but it seemed that the guitarist pre-empted his intentions since he spoke up at the exact same moment. “It’s ribbon skating! You get a ribbon of a certain colour and you’re supposed to find someone with the same colour to skate with. You’ve seen it in movies, trust me.” And there was no way for Toshiya to deny that since he knew he had seen one or more romantic movies that Die had forced him to sit through.
“What if I don’t want to skate with someone who has the same colour?” Toshiya asked, arching an eyebrow as he looked at the older man questioningly. The sparkle in Die’s eyes was irresistible though, his smile even widening as he looked straight back. “Don’t be a spoil sport! Let’s see what colours we get. Maybe we get the same one!” He sounded so enthusiastic that Toshiya didn’t have the heart to say that out of seven different colours, the chances that they’d get the same colour wasn’t that high.
Die only gave him a smirk and when they stepped closer to get in line, he wordlessly stood right after some girl in a miniskirt, taking the queue meant for women. Okay, clever, Toshiya thought and he couldn’t help but to chuckle, shaking his head a bit. At least this way they wouldn’t be next to each other in line so the chances of getting paired up was slightly bigger. Maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea, after all?
That thought vanished as soon as it came though. As soon as he had his rented skates and he tried to slide on ice, he noticed that the years spent off ice had seriously damaged his balance and his skating skills. He could still stay upright, but all kind of moving was slightly… challenging. At least they were both equally bad, he thought inwardly as Die approached him, his arms spread wide in an attempt to keep his balance and not fall flat on his ass. It looked more than amusing, and yet at the same time somehow alluring, although Toshiya had no idea how Die pulled that off.
He was the man of contradictions, able to be completely and utterly adorable and drop dead gorgeous both at the same time. Even when they had just met, all those years ago, Toshiya had noticed that there was something special in this man with big sparkling eyes and a wide smile. If he had said that out loud, Die would have blushed and laughed, telling Toshiya to shut up and stop describing himself.
Toshiya was pulled out of his thoughts when a hand landed on his shoulder, a brightly grinning Die right next to him, although his balance still wasn’t all that perfect. “Man, did you see how I got all the way here? I didn’t even fall on my ass!” He looked almost ridiculously happy about that, grinning like the Cheshire cat, and Toshiya didn’t have the heart to admit that he’d been thinking of something completely different instead of focusing on watching the guitarist try to skate.
“Alright, you got your skating, can we now go and buy some hot chocolate and sit down so we won’t break any bones?” Toshiya tried, flashing the other man one of those lopsided grins that were so typical for him when he wanted something. He had to give in with a small sigh. There was no way that Die would let him get away with this already. “Alright,” he sighed, deciding he’d take it like a man. “What kind of a ribbon did you get?”
That now made Die’s smile even widen and he grabbed the ribbon he had attached on his jacket with a safety pin, stretching it a bit closer to the other man. “I got a pink one! I bet that the girl who sold them was so shaken to see me in the line for the ladies that she automatically gave me the girliest one! You should’ve seen how she looked at me!” He laughed freely, and even Toshiya had to snicker as he could very well imagine the scene in his mind.
“Then I have bad news for you, babe,” he smirked at the guitarist, presenting his own ribbon for him. “A blue one. Blue and baby pink don’t exactly go for the same color. Does this mean I have to go and find me another date?” His eyes were sparkling teasingly, and anyone who knew him could tell what he was aiming to.
As expected, Die snorted at his question, hooking their arms instantly. “No. Haven’t you paid attention to the romantic movies? If you don’t happen to find your match, you can skate with others. And of course then there will be sparkles flying between us and before time we only see each other, and ta-da, the movie is complete!” He babbled away, obviously not completely serious about that. But it didn’t stop him from painting the scenario anyway, making the younger man laugh with his vivid imagination.
That was how they skated forward, their arms hooked and their lips pursed into a focused frown as they tried their very best to keep their balance. It was surprisingly much fun, even despite the several incidents when they found themselves on the surface of the ice. Die managed to fall flat on his ass several times, and even once on his face, spitting snow from his mouth while trying to control his laughter. Toshiya did slightly better, although several times Die dragged him down with him.
Once Die even managed to grab Toshiya’s belt in an attempt to keep his balance, and he almost dragged his pants down with him. It was quite a sight, Toshiya holding on to his jeans and Die clinging on to them, pulling them down. “I’m sorry,” the guitarist laughed as he finally managed to get up on his own two feet again, his eyes sparkling deeply, “I promise, I won’t try to get you out of your pants in public again!”
“You’d better!” Toshiya tried to glare at him, but he didn’t really manage as a grin was tugging his lips already, and he simply couldn’t hold it back anymore. He tugged his pants up and fastened his belt properly, flashing a grin at some girls who skated by and giggled at him. “Man, you owe me a hot chocolate now! I’m freezing!” He complained theatrically, emphasizing it by shuddering clearly.
Die nodded, still laughing. “Alright, alright. Let’s go get some.” He hooked their arms again, giving Toshiya a slap on his ass when he reminded him not to touch his pants again. Together they skated towards the little kiosk where the scout girls sold hot chocolate with marshmallows. This time, it could even be called skating, since they managed to move pretty gracefully. At least compared to their earlier attempts.
It appeared that their timing was absolutely perfect, since just when they sat down on one of the wooden benches, stretching out their legs, some big fluffy snowflakes began to flutter down from the dark sky, getting stuck on their hair and their eyelashes. That instantly made them both smile, and they looked at each other shortly, wordlessly. Only after taking a long sip from his hot chocolate, Die hooked their arms and sighed lowly. “This is pretty damn cool, isn’t it?”
“I’d say it’s cold. My toes are freezing!” the bassist answered grinning even though he knew that it would earn him a slap. It never came, instead Die suddenly squealed a little bit, leaning over to the side and reaching for the pile of snow. He obviously had found something from there, and when he straightened he was grinning like he had won the lottery. “Look!”
He held a small ribbon in his hand, a bright blue one, exactly like the one Toshiya had attached on his jacket. Grinning happily, he got rid of his pale pink ribbon, sticking it into his pocket so he could replace it with the bright blue one. Toshiya couldn’t help but to chuckle, glancing from his ribbon to Die’s ribbon. This actually was pretty damn cool. And it felt like a good sign. Definitely.
“You’re right,” he smiled at the guitarist, a loving sparkle in his eyes. “This is pretty damn awesome.”
