Pairing: Kaoru/Die
Disclaimer: I own no one, only my dirty imagination.
Summary: Die has been gone for a week and Kaoru feels completely crippled on his own. Not that he’d admit that to anyone, but he does. And he is looking forward to Die’s return like it’s the highlight of the year.
Comments: This was written for [livejournal.com profile] magdalan on request. And it turned out pretty long actually! I’m proud of myself :D haha yeah, it’s up to you to decide how good it is but at least it’s more than a drabble, eh? It’s so hot here that I have no brain activity so you won’t get anything more coherent for a comment, I’m sorry. But do enjoy :)

And feel free to add our journal if you like the stories!
Plus, the archive.

Countdown

Seven twenty-four

The alarm went off at this ungodly hour once again, never failing to make Kaoru curse like an old sailor. Contrary to the popular belief, Die was the one who got up before the sun, enjoying the hours when no one else was yet awake. He had even taken up Kendo again, enthusiastic to have something to direct his attention to. Kaoru wasn’t lazy either, though. He didn’t need much sleep to function, and he could get by with less than five hours a night. But it didn’t mean he wouldn’t enjoy sleeping in long in the mornings. Especially now, he sighed in deep as he sat up on the bed and pushed the covers off his form. He was becoming old, probably. He would’ve wanted to just stay under the warm blanket and enjoy a slow morning cuddling up to the warm form of Die’s right next to him.

Except that there was one flaw to his plan. Die wasn’t home. He had been gone for a whole week, and although Kaoru took pride in how he and Die were capable of functioning as separate units even after being together for ten years, he was beginning to miss the other man. A lot. A hell lot. Okay, he was craving for closeness and called the younger guitarist three times a day just to hear his voice. All with good excuses, of course. He would rather jump off a roof than admit how pathetic he was feeling right now and how much he would want things to return back to normal. Normal obviously meaning waking up next to Die every morning and going to bed with him, waking up in the middle of the night to his tossing and turning and listening to him complain about all the small things he did to annoy him.

Kaoru missed the togetherness. The way Die could complete a sentence he began, the way Die knew already before he spoke what he was going to say in a given situation. They simply knew each other, and not in an I-know-everything-about-you-and-you-are-boring kind of way but in an I-know-everything-about-you-and-still-I-always-learn-more kind of way. And Kaoru wanted that back, wanted it now. Grumpily, he made his way into the bathroom, leaving the door open automatically since normally Die would’ve followed straight behind. Only not now. And that managed to even increase his grumpiness.

This day wasn’t beginning well. There was only one thing that made light shine at the end of the tunnel: Today Die was coming back home!

Eight thirty-one

The next stumbling stone already awaited Kaoru on his way to work. The traffic was horrendous and no matter how much he cursed, swore, waved his fist and grumbled at the other drivers, the lines weren’t moving in a way he would’ve wanted them to. By the time he got to the studio he was so tense that a single touch could’ve made him snap, easily. He didn’t even realize how tense he was before he practically growled at Toshiya, snapped at Shinya for standing in his way and got yelled at for it by Kyo.

“Sorry,” Kaoru got the apology out through gritted teeth, trying his best to calm down and relax as he knew that it wasn’t the fault of his friends that he was in such a foul mood. “The traffic was hell.” He hoped that it was enough explanation and that he wouldn’t need to go for anything more. Usually, if they were late, it was Die who explained and apologized. He was much better with it, he was always smiling and easy with people and somehow magically knew all the words that fit the moment. While Kaoru? He knew his business talk, he knew how to deal with people professionally, but otherwise… yeah he still had issues to work through.

“Man,” Toshiya rolled his eyes, but if one knew him it was obvious he wasn’t as annoyed as he tried to make it seem. There even was an amused glint in his eyes as he eyed the lead guitarist. “The traffic is always like that.” He lived in the same part of the city as the guitarists, so he took almost the same way to work every day.

The words made Kaoru startle a little. Maybe the bassist was right. Only that usually he didn’t have to make it to work alone through that traffic. When he began to get tense and annoyed, there was always a calming hand on his thigh, a soft smile offered to him, a few distracting words to take his mind off it. Die. Die was there, calming him down and easing his temper.

Shit, he really needed to have the other man back. Right now.

Ten twenty

At least Kaoru’s foul mood managed to evaporate somewhat as he got a text message from Die a bit before he was supposed to be in a meeting. A meeting about the next tour, all the boring things that needed to be taken care of from renting the bus to setting the dates so they could actually get there on time, contacting the right people… A shitload of work and they needed to get the ball rolling finally if they ever intended on managing with it. The message caught Kaoru’s attention for a good while, though and he was debating with himself on what to reply to that. By the time he was done, he noticed that he had to hurry not to miss the beginning of the meeting.

He headed straight into the cafeteria, knowing he wouldn’t get through the meeting without a steady dosage of caffeine in his system. After ordering a big black coffee and a latte – something he considered coffee raped with milk and never understood why Die liked it – he grabbed them in both hands and turned back to get into the conference room. He didn’t even make it through the door of the cafeteria before he suddenly stopped dead on his tracks.

Why the fuck had he gotten two coffees?

Force of habit, he decided inwardly, cringing a little as he tried to shake the embarrassment off and focus on the meeting ahead. He would certainly not go back and say he accidentally ordered an extra coffee, he would not. That would be so embarrassing and he was already ashamed enough as it was. What was he supposed to say, anyway? “Oh sorry, I thought my boyfriend was here although he’s gone for days and I accidentally got him a coffee too.” Certainly not.

Kaoru was still feeling quite stupid, trying to hide it the best he could, while he sat in the meeting and gulped down that milk-raped coffee.

Ten thirty-seven

“Kaoru? What do you think of it? …Kaoru?”

The familiar voice suddenly startled Kaoru out of his thoughts and his eyes flew wide as he looked around at the table. Everyone else was staring at him, expectant, and he had no idea what the hell they wanted from him. He simply hadn’t been listening, his thoughts taking off completely. It wasn’t like that had never happened before, it was actually quite common for him. When he got stuck to a detail that needed to be taken care of his mind might go on a tangent for a good while, one thing leading to another. He was still thinking business, organizing things in his mind, but the thing was that he didn’t listen to what others were saying then.

Like now, he had no idea what those wide-eyed looks were for. Everyone looked at him more or less confused, while he opened and closed his mouth a couple of times, trying to figure out a way to save his dignity at least somewhat. Man, when had he last managed to embarrass himself several times a day? Every time his thoughts began to wander in a meeting, he got a subtle jab on the ribs from Die or a soft kick on his ankle that startled him back to reality. But now, for obvious reasons, his personal safety-net was missing and he had managed to tumble all the way down on the rough asphalt. Shit.

Somehow, he managed to salvage the situation but if one looked carefully, there still was a hint of red colouring his cheeks, half-hidden by the longer strands of his hair.

Eleven fifteen

It was finally time for lunch and Kaoru heaved a relieved sigh as he staggered out of the conference room. He hadn’t packed lunch in the morning – Hell, he couldn’t cook to save his life anyway so what would he have done? Usually they had sandwiches Die somehow managed to get together in the mornings but, obviously, not now. – so he had to head out unless he wanted to listen to the ‘eat healthy in the mornings’ lecture from Toshiya or beg Shinya to share his lunch with him since the man always had enough for a dozen people to eat from it. Until this day, he had never figured out why Shinya wasn’t a fat man who weighed 300 pounds as he always ate so much.

Strolling along the streets Kaoru skimmed the restaurants, one after another as this part of the city seemed to be crammed full of them. He wasn’t in the mood for burgers or pizza or anything else that he got too much of during their tours abroad. For a moment he eyed the sushi bar, in the end deciding not to go in since almost all the dishes included fish, more or less, and Die didn’t like fish. He rather skipped lunch than ate fish and Kaoru rarely insisted on having some seafood for himself although he did like it. Not today, he decided inwardly, today he would go for something they both liked.

He didn’t even realize there was a flaw in his logic.

Twelve eleven

After the lunch break they only had another short meeting, after which everyone was free to do whatever they wanted to. At first Kaoru had thought that he would stay at the studio, work on some new songs maybe, or then make sure that everything was handled properly for the upcoming tour. He was already sitting at the desk, cheek pressed in his palm and chewing on a pencil, when suddenly his eyes snapped wide open.

Welcome.

He should welcome Die home properly! Yes, that was a good idea. Instantly his mind set out to work on the highest setting, rapidly racing through all the possible options on what he could do. Die liked all these little romantic things, from a dinner together to getting roses – What kind of a man liked roses anyway? Die did, at least. Maybe it took more guts to admit that than to deny it, in the end. – and Kaoru paid attention to that way too rarely anyway. Die surprised him often enough with small presents or thoughtful gestures, it was about time he gave something back instead of getting absorbed in his work.

Kaoru was so enthusiastic about his plan that he hardly managed to grab his coat, leaving his bandmates standing there and staring after him as he left without even a word.

Three fifty-five

The shopping had been murder, and silently Kaoru swore that he would never again go buy groceries at the same time with all those frustrated housewives. They were like a bunch of wild animals attacking each other for the latest sales, and he so wasn’t meant for that world. It was easier when you weren’t alone, at least, but now Kaoru had a feeling that he’d been overrun by a herd of buffalos. He had a headache, he had hit his elbow on a shelf, he had forgotten to buy half of the things he had needed… Yes, a full catastrophe.

Thankfully he had everything essential and the rest he could improvise. Besides don’t they say that well-planned is half-done already? He was at least two thirds done if that was true since he had a perfect plan in his mind. A fool-proof plan. Okay maybe not a housewife-proof and he still felt trampled but still, things were going to turn out good. After a good, long shower he felt refreshed at least – hopefully looked refreshed too – and set out to prepare everything for the long evening together.

While he was clearing the kitchen his phone vibrated in his pocket and when he dug it out, only one look at the display conjured a smile on his face.

‘Will be home in an hour. Keep the bed warm.’

Oh he would surely keep the bed warm, Kaoru thought as a grin ghosted over his lips. And he would keep the food warm, he would literally sweep the other man off his feet today. That was the plan, and his masterplans never failed.

Five ten

Will be home in an hour.

Kaoru checked the message for what felt like a hundredth time. Die should be there any second now. Everything was perfect. Yet he had to check and double-check as he was paranoid that he had forgotten something.

Even if he had, he knew they could work from there.

Eight twenty-two

Die was exhausted. He’d been supposed to be back home already more than three hours ago, but obviously things don’t always work the way you want them to work. He didn’t even want to think of the past hours, wanted to just get rid of his shoes and his jacket and plop on the couch with a cold beer. Anything to relax and get his mind off these disastrous hours. While opening the front door he had to smile, though, as he knew that he had someone to get back home to. It was considerably better from returning to a cold, empty apartment after a long absence.

Especially since he had really missed the other man these past days.

He let the door fall shut behind him, dropped his bag down, kicked the shoes off and reached to hang up his jacket on the rack. Home sweet home. One could barely hear his footsteps on the wooden floor as he headed into the living room, stopping in the doorway almost abruptly.

Now this was something he hadn’t been expecting.

Kaoru was half-lying, half-sitting on the couch, obviously fast asleep. His lips were parted, his breathing regular and for a moment Die just stood there, watching Kaoru’s eyelids flutter against his cheeks. He couldn’t help but to smile. Kaoru was wearing a suit. Okay, not a formal suit, but a white button-up shirt with that jacket he had worn for a photoshoot long ago, black pants and even a loose tie. This was special, now wasn’t it? Die had hardly made a secret of how much he enjoyed seeing the older man in a suit, and his heart was already beating fast in his chest. He thought that Kaoru had this certain elegance that was even underlined by the formal wear. Oh and okay, he had a thing for men in suits in general, admittedly. Especially Kaoru in a suit.

That wasn’t all of it, though. The table was set, even candles lit although they were almost completely melted by now. There even were flowers in a plain vase he never remembered seeing before. Die had to laugh softly as he noticed the bag from a nearby Italian restaurant though. Of course. Kaoru couldn’t cook to save his life, he even burned down water on the bad days. Not that he was much better but that was beside the point. He could already guess what the food was as he knew that Kaoru had gotten their favourites.

Slowly, Die approached the couch, as silently as he could. Not that he really had to, when Kaoru was asleep like that not even a nuclear bomb could wake him up if he didn’t want to. Still he made a point of approaching silently, until he was standing right next to the sleeping man. Die based his right knee on the couch next to the other man, leaning over his form until their faces were almost touching.

A brush of lips on lips, and nothing happened.

A more firm, chaste peck, and Kaoru’s eyelids fluttered.

Die knew that Kaoru was waking up when he tilted his head enough to initiate a real, deeper kiss this time. Not a word was exchanged as he moved fully on the couch, sliding as close as possible, arms twining around shoulders and chests pressed together. Who needed words anyway?

This was one hell of a welcome.

Nine

It took a good while, but finally they managed to get into the kitchen to heat the takeout Kaoru had ordered for them hours earlier. Die couldn’t stop grinning at that, not even when Kaoru gave him a firm jab in the ribs for mocking him. “Hey it’s not my fault you can’t cook,” Die shrugged and ably dodged the next hit that was aimed at his head this time. They could both waltz the discussion to and fro, they’d been through it countless times these past years. Still they always went for it, as it had somehow grown to a comfortable routine.

With the warm food in the cartons they made their way back into the living room. They took only one glance at the plates and glasses on the table, the candles almost burnt out already, before they simply headed over to the couch. In no time Die was sitting in the corner of the couch, with Kaoru’s legs on his lap. They ate slowly, relishing the bites and in between, Die told about his trip and all the more or less important things that had happened. In between Kaoru dug a piece of meat or some rice out from the container and offered Die a bite of what he was eating, sharing naturally.

Kaoru had always thought that it was pathetic to feed your girl- or boyfriend like this, that it was somehow a pretentious and weird way to show affection but right now he noticed that his perceptions were changing rapidly. He quite enjoyed the way Die’s lips enclosed around the food when he brought it to his mouth, the low pleased sounds that escaped him every time he tasted something good – not only food, Kaoru thought inwardly and instantly the thought made his cheeks heat up and his stomach twist pleasantly.

Focus on the food. Pretend that there’s nothing else going on in your mind. Stay casual.

Kaoru’s calm appearance could’ve fooled pretty much anyone else, but only one glance at Die’s sparkling eyes told him that he had been caught. The next time Die received some food from the older guitarist he didn’t even try to hold back a small smirk. The bastard was making a show out of this.

Nine forty-three

After they were done with the food they still stayed on the couch for a while, before Kaoru suggested he’d get them something to drink. Die didn’t know why he had expected beer, he should’ve known that the older man had grown a sophisticated side to him lately. When Kaoru returned with a bottle of red-wine and two glasses he received an arched eyebrow, along with a small grin. “Wine?” Die didn’t need to say anything further and Kaoru reached to set down the glasses on the table with a huge sigh. “Fine.”

They spent the next few hours drinking wine straight from the bottle. Somehow Die ended up sitting on the comfortable rug in front of the couch, Kaoru’s head pillowed on his lap. Normally the older man would’ve admonished him when he playfully aimed to pour some wine into his mouth, but now Kaoru only laughed and wiped the spilled droplets off his face with the back of his hand.

The more they drank, the more they laughed, the more they talked, re-living the happenings from the past week to share them with each other. They had run out of wine the longest and still neither of them made a move, not wanting to break the moment.

This was what they needed: these slow moments to reload their mental batteries.

Eleven thirteen

Two bottles of wine later Kaoru noticed that he much rather only watched Die’s lips move than listened to what he had to say. His head was spinning a little, his world slightly hazy and there was this lightheaded giddy feeling bubbling up in his chest. It made him feel like a teenager for a moment and that thought almost made him laugh. Teenager? C’mon, he was a serious rockstar! “You know, Die,” he practically only purred when he shifted closer, bringing his face so close to Die’s that their breaths were already mixing. An effective way to make Die stop talking, at least.

Originally Kaoru had planned to use some horrible, pathetic pick-up line, but he didn’t need to. He didn’t have the time to say a single word and his lips were claimed in a slow, sensual kiss. He had never gotten over the fact that Die’s lips were so soft against his own, slightly chipped ones and that always made him space out whether he wanted it or not.

He was a willing victim though.

Short kisses turned to longer, deeper ones. Soft, almost tentative touches morphed into demanding ones. They took their time nevertheless, peeling off layers of clothing as they relished the moment. It wasn’t the first time they made love on the rug in front of the couch, but somehow it almost felt like that.

When they were lying on the floor in a heap of limbs, sweaty skin on skin, Kaoru wordlessly placed a soft kiss in the crook of Die’s neck.

Two twenty-two

Hours later they finally made it to bed, after several rounds of ‘welcome home’. Die lifted the covers as Kaoru sneaked close to him, pressing close against his back so he could drape a tattooed arm around his waist. “I missed you.” Kaoru’s voice was a rough murmur against the younger man’s neck, his beard tickling him just enough to make him sigh a little. Instantly, Die shifted to get even closer, as if he was trying to suck up all the warmth from the smaller body against his back.

“Man, I felt totally crippled without you.” Die didn’t even try to hide his amusement as he spoke up the next moment, laughter resonating in the undertones although otherwise he sounded languid and relaxed. Well-fucked, Kaoru thought inwardly, and it made him smirk instantly. He had missed that tone, missed the way Die was practically melting against him.

The words made Kaoru hide a smile, though, and he bit back the confessions he could’ve made in turn. He didn’t need to tell Die he had felt the same way, completely incompetent to get along on his own.

Die knew it anyway.

Oh but having Kaoru fucking Die on a rug is ALWAYS a good thing! 8D I at least think so. *coughs* I had all too much fun imagining that part. Does it make me a bad person? 8D

Thank you sooo much <3 I'm happy to hear you like it! haha and I'm not even a coffee rapist, I'm a complete racist and don't drink it at all!

[identity profile] daidetre.livejournal.com 2010-07-30 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes yes, it's all very good, as long as they don't get carpet burn xD Hmmm... possibly... but considering I've been going over it very thoroughly in my mind all morning, we can be bad people together :D

[identity profile] cim26.livejournal.com 2010-07-30 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
So cute <3 I love how Kaoru would unconsciously get/do things for Die without noticing that he's doing it even though Die isn't there. This just makes me really hope for a relationship like this someday~

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2010-07-30 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! <3 I'm happy you liked it :) And I really hope for something like this too. Kaoru simply doesn't even notice how much he thinks of Die and how much he does for him :)

I always love your fics, but this piece of loveliness was one of your best! The way you divided it in chronological segments, the way you always portray Kaoru's apparent hardness that hides the gentle caring man underneath.. I can live for your writing. <3

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2010-07-30 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww thank you so much! ♥ I have to admit, when I came up with the idea and the way to build the fic, I was quite happy about it *laughs* So I'm really glad it worked out in the end :) And your comment, it made me so happy!
