The Real Fairytale
Old people used to say that the moment just before sunrise was magical.
It was the moment when sun said good morning to the world, the moment when it waved to the passing night, the moment of the doors opening between different realities. Magic seeped into this world then, fairies were dancing in the woods, between the trees like fireflies. And at that magical moment, you might manage to catch a bit of the stardust, the first rays of the rising sun, or a fairy.
If you did, it would change your life forever.
That was why Toshiya had always liked to watch the sunrise. When he had been a child he had even brought a jar with him, with a lid, so he could try to catch a bit of the light inside and keep it there. Sometimes he was there with a friend, sometimes with his sister. Usually he was alone, though. Then he wouldn't scare the fairies away.
No matter how often he kept failing, he always kept trying too. Until he grew older, moved to another place to go to school, finally joined a band and ended up traveling constantly. For years, he had forgotten about that magical moment. For decades. Until somehow, their tour had brought him back to the area he grew up in. It wasn't that he hadn't been back there before, visiting his folks and all. But never had he thought of the fairies.
The hotel was conveniently close to... well, nothing. In the middle of nowhere. Maybe that was why one morning Toshiya sneaked out when no one else was yet awake. Deep, dark shadows were already paling out, a little light seeping into the world even though the sun hadn't yet crept above the horizon. It was cold, some mist lingering right above the ground and making him shiver. He wrapped his jacket tighter around his frame.
When he reached the meadow right next to a forest, he stopped. Waited. Watching, listening, observing. Not even the birds were chirping yet, it was the most silent moment of the whole night. He didn't know how long he had been standing there. In the middle of nowhere, watching as the sun slowly crept up and colored the horizon in vivid colors.
He should've startled when he heard the soft "Hey," from only a few steps away behind him. The reason he didn't was that it only took him a split second to recognize the familiar voice, and maybe his subconsciousness had been already aware of that presence before he realized it. He turned his head just a little bit, a small smile tugging the corners of his mouth. "Hey."
Die stepped closer until they were standing right beside each other, their shoulders touching. Even though they both were wearing their jackets, that small contact was enough to make Toshiya's heart leap in his chest, his smile widening considerably. He had told Die about the moment of magic and fairies once. When they had met, when everything had been new and they had been talking the night away over a glass of beer. Or several glasses of beer, anyway.
At first he wasn't even sure if Die remembered. It had been years and well, it was a kind of childish thing to believe in. Since Toshiya did, believe in it, somewhere deep down inside at least. All his doubts were like washed away when Die shifted closer, hooking his arm with Toshiya's, long cool fingers twining together. "You should've brought a jar." Die's voice was so soft it was barely audible, and yet Toshiya heard every word loud and clear.
"I know." Toshiya replied lowly. "But now it's kind of too late." He knew that there would be other chances, moments like this. And this time he definitely wouldn't sneak out all alone. Not when he knew what the alternative was. It didn't even matter if he never caught a fairy, never managed to trap those rays of rising sun into a jar. What mattered was that he tried. And enjoyed every second of it.
Die didn't reply anything to the words, he only tilted his head and waited. Waited until Toshiya turned to look at him, their eyes met and they exchanged a smile. Again, Toshiya's heart leaped in his chest, only to begin drumming forcefully against his ribs.
Maybe he had caught a fairy after all. At least the look in Die's eyes was magical when he leaned in and kissed him.
