Title: Back to Basics

Rating: PG13
Pairing: Die/Kaoru
Disclaimer: I own no one, only my dirty imagination.
Summary: Kaoru almost surrendered to his fate already, and accepted that his life would inevitably get more boring with every single passing year. But obviously Die had other ideas. He wasn’t going to let that happen.

fonulyn: I friggin’ hate writing summaries. Hate. Just to let you all know XD I wrote this for the March challenge over at
diexkaorulove. Wasn’t so sure at first if I should participate, but we didn’t get that many fics to begin with and I figured that what the hell, it shouldn’t at least harm anyone if I thrown in a drably ficlet x) I don’t know how consistent it is, I wrote it kinda backwards, the last part first, then the middle part and then the beginning. But I liked the mood so I figured you might like it too :)
And feel free to add our journal if you like the stories!
Plus, the archive.
Back to Basics
Kaoru knows that age doesn’t come alone. With age, he has to take the dark circles under his eyes, he has to learn to deal with grey hair and the little belly he’s growing. He’s no longer twenty-something but he’s thirty-something, soon he’s going to be forty-something. And while he knows it doesn’t mean his life is over, hell, it’s hardly even halfway through, he still doesn’t have to like it.
Maybe this is some kind of a middle-life crisis, he thinks to himself. What do middle-aged men usually do when they’re having a crisis? Change their job… nope, not gonna work. He was a rock god, damnit, not a boring businessman. Take a young mistress? No, not an option either. He had had his fair share of groupies and screwing around, and he hadn’t missed any of that for years. Besides, a mistress would be a totally wrong way to phrase his very much male partner. Technically, Die was at least younger than he. So maybe that one was halfway true?
He had a fast car and a fancy apartment, he had a collection of guitars and a studio at home. Buying something new certainly wasn’t going to solve the problem.
He almost surrendered to his fate already, and accepted that his life would inevitably get more boring with every single passing year. But obviously Die had other ideas. He wasn’t going to let that happen.
A bright morning light was shining through the gap in the curtains, and no matter how much Kaoru tried to frown at it, it wasn’t going to go away. He could’ve turned around, but he didn’t feel like moving, he had just managed to wrap himself up in the blanket all nicely, feeling very nice and warm. If only it wasn’t for that annoying ray of light, ruining an otherwise perfect morning.
It was because of the light that he wasn’t sure he had seen right at first. He saw something from the corner of his eyes, a movement he assumed was Die stepping into the room. At least he hoped it was Die stepping into the room, instead of a burglar or a murderer, or maybe his annoying mother who never knew how to knock and had somehow managed to blackmail a key from her son. Actually, he would prefer the murderer to his mother, at least. He would have better chances of survival then.
Groaning displeased, Kaoru finally turned on his back. A weight settled on the mattress right next to him, and theatrically he placed his arm on his eyes, as if to shield himself from the cruel sunlight. “C’mon Die. It’s Sunday. Lemme sleep a little while longer…”
There was no answer. Nothing.
Curious, Kaoru lifted his arm to sneak a peek at the other man, who was obviously just sitting there on his knees, watching him. What he saw, totally threw him off. An apron? Die was sitting there, alright, but he was wearing only a pink kiss-the-cook apron that he had gotten as a present from Toshiya a couple of Christmases ago. Yes, granted, Die liked to cook them breakfast at times. If making scrambled eggs and strong coffee counted as cooking. But never ever in his life had Kaoru seen Die wear an apron.
The best part was though that he wasn’t wearing anything underneath.
“Die, what the hell are you doing?” The question burst out before Kaoru had the time to bite it back, and he was sure that he looked as dumbfounded as he sounded.
It didn’t seem that his question was taken seriously though as Die only snorted, a lopsided grin tugging on his lips. “What am I doing? I am wearing an apron. With nothing on underneath.”
Rubbing the bridge of his nose with his fingers, Kaoru swallowed a huge sigh, as well as the comment that the other man was completely impossible. Die knew that to begin with. He had been equally impossible for the past thirteen years. And he wasn’t about to change now. “Sorry, let me rephrase that. Why are you wearing an apron with nothing on underneath?”
“Why?” Die had an annoying habit of repeating all the questions before answering them, and inwardly Kaoru decided he would once strangle him for that. The annoyance got considerably milder when he received a smile though, one of those heartmelting smiles that only Die was capable of giving. “Because I thought you’d enjoy it.”
“Enjoy it?” This time Kaoru found himself repeating the question, his eyes widening slightly as he sat up on his place and looked questioningly at the other man. “You make me sound like such a dirty old man.”
The wording made Die chuckle and he tilted his head a little bit, his eyes sparkling deeply as he looked straight at the other man. “Well,” he drawled lowly, “I thought that you were one.”
“Right, right.” Kaoru waved aside. He already shifted closer, reaching out his hand to run his fingertips down the smooth, white skin on the other man’s shoulder. He would be damned if he’d let this kind of an opportunity pass him by unused. At least he was dirty enough to know this could turn out to be something very, very delightful.
The breakfast could wait a little longer.
Yes, Kaoru is growing a little belly, Die thinks as he leans his cheek on Kaoru’s chest. Slowly, he allows his fingers to slide downwards, circling the other man’s navel before brushing over the thin line of hair on his lower stomach, dangerously close to his groin. Kaoru grunts lowly, the sound forming deep in his throat and it’s an audible proof of how relaxed he is. He doesn’t think of work, doesn’t think of the unfinished business or the heap of papers with little scribbled notes on his desk.
He just is. Breathes in, breathes out.
Kaoru barely notices when his fingers tangle in Die’s hair, when he begins to toy with the chocolate brown strands lazily. Gently. All he knows is that this is exactly how things are supposed to be. He feels he’s too old to stay up the whole night and still survive work the next day. He feels he’s too old to make things more complicated than necessary.
Back to basics.
As long as he has moments like this he knows he is happy.

I told you I like this a lot. It's still surprising me much to see how well you draw the problem one has with aging. Heh, And you know, I like how Die kinda thinks too Kao grows a tiny beerbelly but that he doesn't care.
And honestly, being woken up by Die with NOTHING on but an apron should bring back youth to your body within seconds, eh?

Hey even though I didn't yet age much I have seen people age XD So there's at least some kind of concept about it x) hehe and Die likes Kaoru's belly! I bet he thinks it's totally adorable.
True, though might be even better with nothing at all XD Who needs the apron?
no subject
Yeah yeah, you are a young wise :D But really, I see what Kaoru feels and what I totally forgot to mention how he thinks about what other guys having a midlife crisis do and nothing applies for him, especially not the young girlfriend :D
Well, for the kink? For the fantasy?

I'm just that intelligent *coughs* 8D Nah, I just make good guesses XD haha and I had fun with the thought of Kaoru with a midlife crisis x) I was reading about that on one mag recently XD
True. Sometimes it's better to have things covered at first XD

Alright, again...
Hunnnyyyyy, don't be mad with me, yeah *puppy dog eyes*
I told you already I like this. And it still amazes me how well you describe the problems that come with aging, being not even 25^^
But hey, being woken up with a Die wearing just an apron should get the juices back into an old body in an instant, eh?
