Halloween Traditions
The sound of the ringing doorbell cut through the still air in the whole apartment, and it took Die exactly two seconds to jump up to his feet and rush towards the door. “That’s the food, I bet!” He announced merrily, grabbing his boyfriend’s wallet from the couch table in passing by. The older guitarist didn’t even think of protesting, it was just as natural as that, his money was Die’s money as well. He just sat in the corner of the couch, grinning a little to himself as the other man was so bouncy and enthusiastic about something as mundane as ordered dinner. At least it was more than common for them to order something when they were home, seeing that neither of them knew how to cook properly.
One could hear some words spoken by the door, and it took only a couple of minutes before Die bounced back to the living room, a bright grin dancing on his lips as he obviously had been looking forward to the dinner already. Once he reached the couch he nonchalantly plopped down to sit on it sideways, facing the older man halfway. “I got you this beef-thing with some spicy sauce but I wanna try it too, and then the sweet and sour chicken is mine, plus there’s some veggie things I thought we can share and the sauce they serve with this is just amazing – ” The rest of the explanation just went through Kaoru’s head without him even registering the words really. He reached to set down the book he had been reading, grinning as he watched the other man’s lips while he spoke.
That was something he could’ve done for ages, just watching Die speak as those full lips were forming the words so delicately, making him stare unintentionally every single time. It always took the younger of the two ages to even realize that too, he went on babbling merrily until at one point he realized that the other man wasn’t even listening to him. As usual, he suddenly stopped talking and just created a small, sulking pout while playfully punching the other man’s shoulder lightly. “C’mon Kao, try to at least pretend that you’re listening to me!” He admonished instantly, unable to keep down the stubborn grin that just forced its way to his lips whether he wanted it or not.
The words made Kaoru chuckle and he shook his head, even rolled his eyes as he reached for one of the cartons to get some food, finally. He had been starving for what felt like an eternity, had only had a cup of black coffee sometime in the morning and now it was already late afternoon. “I know what you’re going to say anyways,” he pointed out with a small shrug, arching an eyebrow as he looked at the younger man. “You always give the same explanations.” The only reaction to that from Die was another pout, along with a theatrical sigh. He couldn’t even deny the words, knowing that it was the truth, but he didn’t need to like it nevertheless, now did he? He didn’t even have the time to come up with a reply though, before Kaoru went on speaking. “How come we always order Chinese food instead of some traditional Japanese?”
His voice had a slight whiny tone to it, and that now made Die grin in turn. Another one of those conversations they had had a million times, something they could waltz to and fro anytime, anywhere. And yet that never got boring, but they just amusedly went through the same topics over and over again. So as usual, Die took on a mock admonishing tone, grinning as he gave his explanation. “Because this way I can ensure that I don’t need to eat anything raw and gross. C’mon, raw fish…” he pulled a face, managing to create a quite believable cringe. “The Chinese eatery is nice enough to only have one fish choice and you don’t even like it. So yeah, I compliment them.” He smirked brightly, his eyes sparkling as he looked at the slightly smaller man.
“Yeah yeah,” Kaoru nodded, not even looking up from the carton he had opened. Instead he dug his chopsticks into the food, too eager to fill his stomach to wait any longer. It took him a few seconds of just chewing on his food, but finally he spoke up again, his mouth still half full although he tried to hastily swallow most of it. “It’s your luck that their food is good and I don’t have anything against ordering from there.” He pointed out, stopping eating for just long enough to focus on the sight of Die’s full lips close around the chopsticks as he took a bite of his own food. There was a little droplet of the sauce in the corner of his mouth, and automatically Kaoru reached out to wipe it off. The small gesture made the younger of the guitarists smile instantly, but he didn’t comment on it.
Instead, he just went on with their conversation, although it sounded completely trivial to anyone else, or would have sounded if anyone had heard them. “Hey, with your deranged taste anything is good enough to order.” It weren’t the teasingly spoken words that mattered though, it wasn’t important what they said. What was important was how everything was said, how every single little gesture they made spoke of such familiarity that it was impossible to pretend. Kaoru would smile a little, softly, in a way he only reserved for Die. In turn, there was a loving tone in Die’s voice when he mocked the other man for speaking funnily with his mouth full of food. It was all there, in small gestures and meaningless words.
Silence fell upon them, all they exchanged were short glances and quick smiles in between. It was a silence of the comfortable kind, neither of them felt the need to say anything as they knew that it was good just the way it was. Wordlessly Kaoru offered Die to taste some of his spicy food, unceremoniously bringing his chopsticks to the other man’s lips. In return he got some of Die’s chicken, and managed to drop the first bite on the couch, which made both of them laugh. They were sitting sideways, almost facing each other, and at one point the younger man finally broke the silence.
“Hey, Kao,” he looked up almost dreamily, and it was pretty obvious that he had something in his mind that he just couldn’t shake off. The older man made a small sound, indicating that he was listening although his eyes were still directed to the remains of his food, the last bites he was just picking on. “How come we never celebrate Halloween?” Die went on, something insisting in his voice. “I mean, dress up funnily and go out to embarrass ourselves, go around and see what kind of amazing costumes other people have chosen. C’mon, I never got to dress up as something cool in Halloween!”
That made Kaoru grin, that smug smile that was so typical for him and he looked up, straight at his lover. “Not true.” He stated simply, the grin even widening as he was obviously very pleased with himself. “Don’t you remember, four years ago, you and I went to this Halloween party and you were dressed as a ghost! Ghosts are cool.” He had personally picked the costume for his boyfriend, and knew exactly why it wasn’t cool in Die’s opinion. He had loved it though, and would do it again anytime, despite the protests he knew it would gain from the taller man.
Instantly the expected reaction came, in form of a low growl and a determined headshake. ”But Kaoru, that was a ghost bride costume! You can’t expect me to be happy wearing a friggin’ wedding dress with a veil and all!” Die managed to somehow summon up a sweet pout, glaring at the older man, who didn’t seem to mind in the slightest, at least judging by the grin on his face. “I looked like a girl! More than I ever did during our VK days.”
“Hey, it was a ghost nevertheless!” The lead guitarist defended himself instantly, not even trying to hold back those few merry chuckles that spilled from his lips. He shifted slightly, trying to get even closer to the younger guitarist without really leaving his comfortable place on the couch. “And baby, you looked so damn sweet when you were trying to take it like a man and act like you didn’t mind at all you were wearing a girl’s dress.” Reaching out, Kaoru touched Die’s cheek with his fingertips, laughing again as his hand was slapped away.
“I’m still bitter about it, you know,” the younger of the two guitarists pointed out, but if one looked closely one could see that his pout was beginning to crack, the stubborn grin almost breaking free already. “You got to be a cool Dracula and I was some odd corpse bride that just got the laughs.” Although he still tried to act hurt, he shifted a little on his place, just to face the other man better. How could he stay mad at the other man? Especially when he remembered clearly how the night had turned out in the end, and how the skirt had actually made certain things a lot easier… That was at least a plus in the costume. A big plus.
“Die,” Kaoru shook his head, chuckling, and this time went straight for the goal as he grabbed the collar of the other man’s shirt, yanking him closer until their lips were almost touching. “You know you weren’t such an oddity. Don’t you remember how every second guy in the room was staring at your skin and your lips, wondering if they are indeed as soft as they look like?” He was grinning, obviously convinced of his own words and not intending on listening to any protests. Instead, he used the grip he had of the other man to hold him still, coevally tilting his head to capture his lips in a playful kiss.
Die didn’t even try to resist. Quite the contrary, he practically melted against the older man, smiling into the kiss as it made his head spin slightly, a flock of butterflies stirring in his stomach. That was something that hadn’t changed during all these years. Die could still remember the first time Kaoru had kissed him all those years ago, when his hair had still been purple and they had been wearing their weird stage outfits. He remembered the way the older man’s lips had been a little dry, like they almost always were, how he had been nervous and yet determined. He remembered the way it had made his knees go weak and his heart pump a thousand miles an hour. That indeed hadn’t changed at all. Something as simple as a kiss still caught him totally off guard.
It was bound to end once, and when they parted they were smiling at each other blissfully. Forgotten were the remains of their takeout, only pushed to the side enough to be out of the way. The moment felt almost magical for a few seconds, until they simultaneously broke the spell by chuckling merrily. “Alright,” Die nodded a little, winking at the other man, his eyes sparkling so much that it looked like the stars had landed down from the skies and taken residence in there. “No dressing up for Halloween. But we are going to celebrate it our own way, eh?” He tilted his head, smiling hopefully.
The words were instantly met with a firm nod, there was no way Kaoru would miss an offer like that. Although, the suggestion actually sounded much more indecent than it even was. Sure they would probably end up all over each other at one point, they usually did whenever they were having a free day at home just for themselves. But that wasn’t what they had planned at first. In a few moments they were both huddled underneath the same blanket on their worn out couch, snuggling up together closely while watching Halloween for the millionth time. It was always the same, had been for almost as long as they had known each other, even though things had evolved slightly from two friends watching a movie together.
Kaoru was leaning comfortably into the corner of the couch, while Die was resting against his chest sideways, his legs pulled up on the couch. It didn’t matter they knew the movie by heart, had seen it several times and were familiar with each little nuance of it. Die was merrily quoting half of the lines, while Kaoru was commenting on every single little detail he always picked on. It was something incredibly familiar, a tradition, and yet there was always something new to it. Be it only a new funny fact one of them noticed, or the mood that always was special for them. They moved over smoothly to another movie right afterwards, enjoying their traditional horror-movie night.
Before the end of the fourth movie that night, Die was already sleeping against Kaoru’s chest, drooling slightly on his shirt as he was lying with his head tilted awkwardly to the side. Smiling, Kaoru simply pulled him closer, practically on his lap, running his fingers through that soft and silky hair. In his sleep, the younger man made a content little noise, snuggling up close to the warm body right beside his.
This was their traditional Halloween night. No funny costumes, no trick or treat, no huge parties. Just the two of them, good food and familiar movies. And of course good company.
It was exactly the way they enjoyed it the most.

And since they mentioned that they had dressed up as a ghost bride and Dracula some time back, I couldn’t resist taking the one needed step further… It’s not the best picture manipulation ever, in fact it’s pretty crappy, but hey, it’s the thought that counts! XD

Anyway, n'awwww! They're so adorable, I love their tradition! And when Kaoru said he was a ghost, I imagined Die running round with a sheet on his head, going 'woo.' xD Which, of course, amused me. But Die in a bride's dress is much better than a sheet and an unenthusiastic woo. Much much better.
Especially when he remembered clearly how the night had turned out in the end, and how the skirt had actually made certain things a lot easier…
My mind likes this line. It likes it a lot. Oh, the glorious imagery.
But, the way they're just so comfortable with each other is just so... squee-worthy! It made me squee. xD
There is no such thing as 'just… well, fluff'. Fluff is GOOD. It's like pure happiness and there can never be enough happiness.
And Die sleeping on him totally killed me in a sugary wave of joy. I hope you're happy. xD

haha, I was imagining that too, only a sheet over him and these little holes cut in it so he can see something and one can see his eyes XD But then I thought of a wedding-dress and I really wanted Die to wear one 8D
Oh I love the image too 8D It's certainly a good reason for a guy to wear a dress *coughs*
I just love imagining them like that, all comfy and domestic and damnit, I can't get enough of writing such moments XD I'm glad you liked it too! Since sometimes I feel I'm going for too mushy x) But you're right1 Never too much happiness! <3
Oh I am happy XD Thank youuu~! Now I'm grinning like an idiot too x) (and I have a thing for sleeping-Die, I think one can notice it *lol)

And because of all that I wrote above I really liked this:"He announced merrily, grabbing his boyfriend’s wallet from the couch table in passing by. The older guitarist didn’t even think of protesting, it was just as natural as that, his money was Die’s money as well".
And lol at the pic! XD Gosh... They expressions matches so well.

Glad to hear you liked that bit too! ^__^
haha, Die doesn't look so happy XD But I doubt he would
before the night when Kaoru rewards him nicely for wearing it 8Dno subject
I bet x). And Kaoru's expression is all like "heheh.. Just wait."
