The First Snowflakes
“Okay guys, we’ll take a break.” I sighed audibly and discarded my guitar to rest against the wall. We had been practicing for all day, and my back ached. My first thought was that I must be getting old or something, but I shook my head to get rid of it. I was still young for god’s sake.
As soon as those words left my lips Kyo and Toshiya disappeared outside, for a smoke I guess. Shinya moved to the couch and took a comfortable position, closing his eyes and enjoying the break. From the corner of my eye, I saw a puff of red disappear out of the other door the room had.
I stretched my back, trying to revive the tired muscles. I couldn’t help but smile slightly, since I knew where Die was heading to. I took a glance at our drummer, and as he seemed to be completely in his own thoughts I left the room, following the other guitarist.
The door to the rooftop was slightly ajar, and I pushed it open. The day was swiftly turning towards the evening, and the sun was setting. We had been practising so intensely that I hadn’t even realized it was so late. I wrapped my arms around myself. It was getting a bit cold too and big, fluffy snowflakes were hovering in the air. The first ones of this winter, I remarked to myself.
There Die was, leaning against the railing and smoking alone. I only had to take a few steps before I was close to him. So close that if I had reached my hand out, I could have touched his shoulder. He didn’t say a word and neither did I, but I was certain that he knew someone was there. And I was certain that he knew it was me. He always knew.
I dug a pack of cigarettes out of my pocket and placed one between my lips before lighting it. The sounds of passing cars echoed from somewhere, along with the distant human voices. But it was like the world was behind a glass, leaving us there alone, only with each other.
He took a long drag of his cigarette, and I watched how the ashes dropped from the other end to fly with the wind. The silence was thick. But not in an oppressive way, it was a silence that landed between two people when no words were needed at the moment.
“You know why I always come here?” His voice was soft, but nevertheless it made me land back to reality and raise my gaze to his face. He didn’t look at me, and I waited for a moment for him to continue. Then it came clear to me that he actually wanted me to answer.
“You like the view?” I suggested, not knowing where he was heading to. My brain was empty of thoughts, and that was actually the only thing that popped into my mind. He only shook his head and remained silent.
For a moment I watched his profile; how his forehead turned to his nose, and how his lips looked against the dark sky. I had a feeling that he wouldn’t talk anytime soon, so I decided to break the silence. “Why then?”
He blinked and stared at the horizon for a while longer, concentrating on smoking. I was already thinking that he wouldn’t answer, but then he slowly turned his head to look at me with those deep eyes of his.
“Because I know that you’ll always follow me.”
Again his words were soft, and a small smile was lingering on his lips. Somehow the answer made my heart fill with happiness, and I felt like nothing else mattered at that moment. I smiled. “That’s true.”
We both turned to look at the distance. White snowflakes danced in the air, creating an enchanting view against the darkening sky.
Go on, no fear. It’s time to dance in the air.
