Chapter 4: Love, sweet love
The next day at school, Kyo was staring at the redhead just like his sister had done. Since Die didn't seem to notice it, he waved his hand in front of his eyes. "Earth calling Die, earth calling Die, are you there?" When his friend turned to look at him questioning, he smirked. "If I wouldn't know better, I'd say you're in love," he remarked coolly, ignoring the curious glances the comment received from their female classmates.
Instantly it caused Die to blush and he averted his gaze quickly, trying to look as casual as possible. "I'm just a bit... distracted, nothing more. Did you say something I was supposed to pay attention to?" He was hoping that his casual act would be convincing enough.
"I was just asking you if we're going to watch this new horror-movie together." The blonde smiled at him, but his sparkling eyes were piercing the redhead still as if to see why he had been so absent. "And if you like to go to that little eatery for lunch instead of eating here... Today's curry day and that always tastes like vomit."
"I..." The redhead pursed his lips, thinking about the matter for a moment. The truth was that he was hoping to see Kaoru at school but he knew the older teen almost always ate his lunch alone somewhere quiet. So he nodded slowly, thinking it wouldn't cause any harm to go to the eatery. "Well why not... It wouldn't take long anyways."
"Are you having an appointment or what?" Kyo chuckled, but was cut off when the teacher entered the room and class began.
Afterwards, the two teens rushed to the eatery which was the last hope for cafeteria-food troubled students. A huge bowl with fried noodles in front of him, Kyo instantly began to shovel them into his mouth. "Did you know that Takumi and Ken are an item now?" he asked, informing the redhead about the latest gossip. Everybody thought Kyo didn't notice anything at school, but fact was that he heard every rumor and even enjoyed them, only that he never took them for granted or babbled to anybody except for Die.
"They are? I wasn't even sure if they were interested in each other..." Die only nodded absent-mindedly, toying with his food before taking a whole mouthful and beginning to chew on it. His thoughts were still at Kaoru and he was being more absent than normally.
A short moment of silence fell between them, but when Kyo reached for his coke to take a sip, he remarked casually. "Yeah, just like you and Kao..."
"But it's not the same, we -" Suddenly the redhead blushed until the color of his face matched the color of his hair. Had he just admitted everything to his friend accidentally?
The small blonde slapped his hands on his knees, laughing triumphantly. "I knew it!" He was looking all too happy. "You two are acting so weird lately. Well, HE was always weird, but you...?"
"Hey! Stop laughing at me like that." Die frowned a bit, but was all too relieved that his friend's reaction was a positive one after all. "It's not like I planned any of it..."
"Well..." Kyo tilted his head, pondering. "Now that I think of it, I was always suspicious why you never went out with one of the cuties that were chasing you. I mean, Kaoru didn't because of his tight schedule and because he's really up-tight, but you?" Grinning again, he asked straight out. "So there's something going on between you two? For real?"
At that moment, it became clear that it had only been a remark to tease his friend who had reacted in a complete different way than expected. The redhead rolled his eyes, letting out a huge sigh. "You bastard." For a moment he glared at his friend but then finally shrugged, thinking it would do no good to stay mad at him. "Maybe." He still didn't know what it was exactly himself either so he was careful with the words. The only thing he was sure of was that he was head over heels, totally captivated by Kaoru.
"That's kinda weird." The small blonde curled his nose, his eyes sparkling teasing. "But don't worry, I won't tell anybody. You do want to keep it a secret or? Is that the reason why you never talk in school?"
"No, it's not the reason. We just never... talk at school." Die shrugged again, not knowing how to explain it. Slowly he was starting to eat again, wanting to get the food finished at one point. "Just don't tell anyone. We... didn't even talk about it before with each other."
"You should look at yourself," Kyo chuckled. "Act like an old couple already. But hey," he raised his hands, "I certainly won't gossip. You should talk to him though and get some points clear. I wouldn't want to be in his skin if anybody found out he's ... well, you know, with a guy. The girls will faint by hundreds and as for you... I don't think your sports-mates would be very charming either." Despite his teasing attitude, he did care for his friend and couldn't conceal that he was a bit worried about him and his cousin.
"Oh," Die hadn't really thought about it that way, he had just been absorbed by the love he felt for the older teen and hadn't wasted a single thought on anything else. Now he saw it though, the necessity to keep it down and not tell everyone. "Yeah. I've got to talk to him."
"Don't look like somebody stole your popsicle." The blonde chuckled, ruffling his friend's hair. "At least you have somebody, right? But not that you now think you can just put me on hold and skip all of our dates. I am a demanding friend," he threatened, batted his eyelashes and used a girly tone. Both knew he didn't mean it, but to hear that his best friend and his cousin somehow had fallen for each other had startled him too and he would need some time to get used to the fact. "So," he drawled grinning, "did you do it yet then?"
"Do what?" The question came instantly and the redhead looked pricelessly dumb.
"It!" Kyo rolled his eyes. "You do know what I mean, right?"
"No." Die blushed even deeper red if it was possible anymore.
"I see." The blonde shovelled a few more noodles into his mouth. He didn't want to urge his friend further although he had to admit that he was curious to hear about things.
"We..." The redhead had the feeling he wanted to tell someone about how things were but he just didn't have the words, nor courage. "We just kissed. And that was kind of chaste too..."
A few other students from their school entered the eatery and forced them to remain quiet about this matter as they had their eyes and ears everywhere. But Kyo saw that Die probably would need a good friend to talk to and he was determined to meet this aspect and listen to him whenever needed. When they were already walking back to school, he stopped Die to tell him just that.
Die truly appreciated that, and made sure to thank the small blonde. Only now he began to realize what a big thing this was, what kind of consequences just wanting to be with the older teen could have. It didn't make him any less happy though, any less in love.
It was Kaoru's tight schedule that made things harder for both of them and although he would have wanted, he couldn't get away from his responsibilities. Every Wednesday evening, he was there as student council, took care of the students' problems and needs. This Wednesday made no exception, only that he couldn't quite focus on the girl who was sitting in front of him. Most of them only came to tell their friends they had seen him anyways, were giggly and childish and he found himself despising them more and more since they kept him away from being with Die, being with the one he really wanted to spend his time with.
The redhead was trying to distract himself by spending time with Kyo or even with his younger sisters, but nothing seemed to help as all he could think of was Kaoru and how he'd want to spend some time with HIM. He had never felt like this, never had had more than just a tiny crush on someone. And now that he was going through his first falling in love, he simply couldn't keep himself completely calm and under control. At least he was able to talk to Kyo about it which made it easier on some level. The evenings were long for both of them and they simply had to trust each other's word that what they felt, what they had said that night in the pouring rain, was real.

"Diiiiie!!!" Mrs Andou shouted from the kitchen. Gladly, she had seen how her son spent time with the older teen, assuming they were working on increasing Die's grades. Indeed, the last two tests had been far better than before, but slowly, she began to worry that Die spent too much time at home for a boy his age. Sure, he was active in sports, but she feared he could miss the best days of his life by not going to parties or the movies as much as other boys age.
So she had been exceptionally happy when Kaoru had called on a day where he and Die weren't supposed to meet. She was hoping the older teen wanted to ask her son to hang out with him elsewhere, because he had mentioned something like that. "Kaoru's on the phone for you!" She emphasized the urgency for Die to show up.
She had no idea what kind of effect the words would have on her son though, since Die simply dropped everything he had been doing, literally, as the controller of his Nintendo hit the floor when he was already running down the stairs by taking several steps at once. He practically shoved his mother aside, flashing her a thankful smile before taking the phone. "Hi Kao."
There was a short moment of silence at the other end of the line, but then, Kaoru chuckled a bit. "Hi." He hadn't thought about his words before calling, but now realized that he should have as this seemed to be harder than expected. "You know," he began and one could hear that he was chewing on his bottom lip, "I wanted to ask if you have something to do now or if you maybe would want to come over for a moment. I- ... My parents aren't there and-" he cut the sentence, chuckling nervously as this truly sounded like an indecent proposal.
"And you're dying for some company?" Die chuckled as well, and turned his back on his mother since he knew he was blushing. Mrs Andou eyed her son carefully, but then decided that teenagers probably wanted their peace and went back to preparing the dinner.
"Well, yeah." The other teen was blushing too, but luckily Die couldn't see him. "I can come over to your place as well, if you don't want to come," Kaoru offered quickly, taking Die's question as a sign that he didn't have anything better to do.
"Oh, I want! If I stay here Erika'll drive me nuts at one point anyways." The redhead smiled, feeling like bouncing up and down a bit as he was all too hyper. "Want me to come already?"
"Sure." Kaoru nodded although the other one couldn't see it. "If you don't mind. Oh," he chuckled again, "did you eat already or shall I order us something?"
"Mom's just cooking but if I come right away then no, I haven't had anything to eat yet." Die nodded again, his smile wide enough to almost break his face. "You need to gimme a moment to get there though."
"Take your time. I'll order us some pizza again. My parents won't be home till tomorrow evening, so my mom left me some money," the older teen explained. He was relieved to hear that Die wanted to come over, because this was one of the rare chances for the two of them to be completely alone and even if they only watched some movie, it would certainly become one of the best evenings of his life.
"Sure, I'll come as soon as I can." The redhead nodded once more, hesitating a bit with what to say next. He almost went for something cheesy but then just simply said goodbyes. "Alright, I'll see ya soon. Bye!"
When he had hung up, his mother smiled widely at him. "So you're going to Kaoru's place? Have some girls come over or?" Before he could say anything, she went on. "Just make sure not to be too late. It's a schoolday tomorrow."
"I won't be too late, I promise." Die smiled at his mother, unable to cover his enthusiasm completely. "Uhm, mom, you still have some of the cookies you made on Monday?" He thought that if the older teen was ordering them pizza he could as well bring something too.
"Of course." She grinned at her son and then nodded towards the door that lead to the living-room. "In the cupboard." When Die darted off to get them, she laughed, glad to see her son this enthusiastic.
The redhead took some of the cookies, grabbed his backbag and stuffed the things in. He appeared in the doorway of the kitchen then, waving at his mother. "Bye! I'll come home some time."
"Have fun!" His mother shouted after him as he was storming out already.
*
Meanwhile, Kaoru was waiting for his arrival nervously and when the doorbell finally rung, he almost tripped over his own feet as he hurried so much to open. Seeing the other teen made him smile and his first instinct was to hug him, wanting to feel him, smell him again. At the last second, he held back though and only stepped aside to let him in. "I'm glad you had the time. Really."
"Are you kidding?" Die chuckled, walking into the huge living room and then turned to face Kaoru once he was standing in the middle of the floor. "I always have time for you! At home there's only my sisters who annoy me to death."
The first part of his statement caused heat to shoot to Kaoru's head and he was blushing although he had no real reason for it. "You want to go to my room? I mean..." Hesitating, he searched for the right words. "It's more cosy there." Indeed it was. Although Kaoru's room was super-tidy and organized; even his books filed from A to Z, it was nothing compared to the living-room. His mother had bought a white couch, the floor being white too and the few furniture in the room was made of some expensive tropical wood. He didn't like it at least and only went there to watch a movie on the huge flat-screen TV when he deemed it worth it.
"Sure thing." Die nodded instantly, eyeing his surroundings. "I'd be afraid I'd break something here anyways..." He chuckled a bit, taking a step towards the slightly shorter teen. Somehow he felt like blushing too, giving a tentative smile. He wanted to reach out for Kaoru's hand, but eventually didn't dare to.
The pizza had already been delivered before Die's arrival and Kaoru quickly grabbed it and a bottle of Coke before they headed upstairs together. "Let's just sit down on the bed," the older teen suggested, not even thinking that this could again be taken the wrong way. It was simply more comfortable than the floor and just sitting in his normal chairs.
Die noticed the possible ambiguous interpretation of the words though and blushed, trying to just force it away though. He simply sat down on the bed, almost in the middle of it, placing his bag beside it on the floor. Kaoru sat down at the bed's head and put the pizza carton between them. "I sliced it already," he explained, handing the other teen a napkin. When their hands touched accidentally, he again blushed, but didn't pull away and instead allowed the contact to linger a moment longer than necessary.
The redhead wanted to grab the hand but he hesitated a moment too long and Kaoru already pulled back. Smiling he took a slice of pizza, trying to concentrate on eating for the time being. He was almost done with it when he suddenly remembered the cookies. "Oh," he reached for the bag, digging up the box from inside. "I brought these. We can have them for dessertif you like." He looked a bit nervous even, but was smiling nevertheless. "They're good, trust me."
"Did your mom make them?" When Die nodded, a smile appeared on Kaoru's lips. "I bet they are good." He kept on looking at the other teen, but began to eat as well. Only after two bites, he put his slice back into the carton, too nervous to eat. Ever since Die had stepped over his threshold, there seemed to be a whole flock of butterflies fluttering in his stomach and his heart was beating so fast that it could bust his chest any moment.
"Not hungry?" Die asked, stopping for a moment as it felt odd to eat while the other teen didn't. He couldn't deny that there was this certain knot in his stomach though, and surprisingly he wasn't hungry anymore right now.
"Not really." Kaoru smiled apologetically. "But hey, you don't need to stop. Just go on." He nodded towards Die's pizza. "It's going to get cold."
"We can heat it later," the redhead presented his perfect solution instantly, his smile bright.
"Sounds like a good plan to me." The older teen mirrored the smile and threw the carton to the clean floor, sliding closer to the other one. "Die, I wanted to," he began, searching for words. Finally though, he stretched his neck a bit to give him a short, chaste kiss.
Die had closed his eyes and held them closed for a moment even after they had parted. Finally he looked straight at the other teenager though, smiling softly. "That what you wanted?" he asked with a small chuckle. Without giving the other boy time to answer he quickly leaned closer, stealing another one of these small, chaste kisses.
"Well, yeah." Kaoru answered honestly, blushing a deep red as he felt caught. It wasn't the complete truth though as he hadn't really thought about that matter, had only been speaking what came to his mind first. His heart was racing again, pounding in his throat.
The younger one slid a bit closer, his smile honest as he tilted his head to look Kaoru straight in the eye. "You know... I kind of wanted it too," he confessed with a chuckle.
"So it's not only me?" The older teen chuckled nervously. This whole moment was still so awkward, but at least they had made a small step ahead. After releasing a deep sigh, meant to gather all the courage he had to offer, he placed his hand on Die's cheek, leaned in and kissed him again. This time though, he opened his mouth a little bit, his tongue touching the other boy's plump bottom-lip. The feeling alone was intoxicating, made his head spin and he felt his whole body turn into jelly.
Reflexively the redhead parted his lips a bit, a small sigh escaping him as he enjoyed the moment to no end. He was nervous too, considerably even, and one glance at his hands would've confirmed that he was even shaking. The moment when their tongues met each other, Kaoru released a small content sigh, the feeling so divine that he couldn't put it into words. He was still holding Die's cheek, lazily stroking it with his thumb and even when the kiss broke again and the two were looking at each other with a dumb smile on their faces, he didn't let go.
The touch made Die feel oddly content and happy inside, and he opened his mouth to say something. Eventually he changed his mind though, only leaning closer to initiate another kiss. It was a bit more solid, a bit less insecure and both parties enjoyed it equally much. Kaoru held his eyes tightly closed and he was sure that Die must've felt how much he meant to him although they had never really talked about their feelings.
The redhead's mind was totally directed at the kiss and he didn't notice when he shifted closer, like drawn by the other's bodyheat. He was bold enough to wrap his arms around Kaoru's neck even, holding on to him. Slowly, the kiss was evolving into something passionate, if one considered that both teens were still careful and afraid to scare the other one away.
It only ended when they were out of breath and Kaoru pulled away a bit, but made sure not to lose Die's arms around him. "I do love you," he whispered as if this realization had just struck him, but he meant it with all his heart as this was exactly how he felt at that moment.
The words caused a blissful smile to appear on Die's face and he - this time consciously - moved closer. "Love you too." He planted a chaste kiss on the other teen's lips.
The words made Kaoru smile and he closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against the other one's. "I'm sorry I don't have as much time. But I trust that things get better."
"It's not your fault, don't worry." The redhead had brought his hands up to cup the other teen's cheeks, stroking them slowly with his thumbs. "I just... well, I'd love it if you can squeeze me into your schedule at least sometimes."
"I try to." The older student nodded emphatically, but sighed again at the next moment. He looked almost crushed and one could see the turmoil that was going on inside him. "Die, when summer vacation comes, I won't have more time than I have now," he admitted, remembering that everybody was looking forward to the summer holidays. "I applied for summer school to work for my entrance exams for university. I want to go to Todai and have to try everything to get there." He knew that this meant Die would be bored out during his holidays unless he went somewhere with his family, while he had to sit in a muggy classroom, studying hard.
"Oh!" One could see the disappointment clearly written on Die's face, but in mere seconds he bravely dug up a smile. He didn't want to make it even harder for Kaoru than it probably was already. "But you'll have some time in the evenings, right? I would offer to help with your studies too, but it would be a total disaster."
"I promise to make some time in the evenings," the older teen said nodding, a smile tugging the corners of his mouth because he was glad that Die didn't cause a huge scene. "And so I will until the holidays come." He seemed determined, really convinced of that. Up until then, there had only been the challenge with his elder brother in his world, but now he was going through his first love, those mixed emotions that made him feel all fuzzy and restless, yet happy. He didn't want to blow it because he didn't have enough time for his boyfriend.
Die thanked the older teen with a chaste kiss, content with that promise. He knew how crammed full Kaoru's schedule was and the fact that he was willing to make time for him meant a lot. "Maybe we'll manage to steal away some random moments, who knows. Let's just wait and see." It was odd of him to be that patient since usually he wanted everything right at the same instant, but he was too nervous to ruin this and wanted to do all he could to make it good.
There was still this tension in the air that showed they hadn't spoken about everything on their minds yet, but there was time for it later as well and Kaoru certainly didn't want to discuss everything at once. Content with where they were, he leaned a bit against the redhead, only to enjoy his warmth, listen to his heartbeat and breathing. After a couple of minutes, he spoke up again. "Want to watch a movie or so?" He didn't want to give the impression that kissing had been the only reason why he had asked Die over.
The redhead pondered for a moment, chewing on his lower lip thoughtfully. Then he chuckled though, shaking his head. "Not really. I'm fine like this." He enjoyed Kaoru's mere presence so much that he didn't want to move right now. They simply didn't need many words and so remained like that, close to each other on the bed. To Kaoru, it was a blessing that he had found somebody who didn't demand anything from him, somebody who just took him as he was without having to play nice and perfect.
When you enjoy what you're doing, time passes by quicker than usual and soon it was already close to midnight, time for Die to leave. He didn't want to go, this melancholy filling him as he would've rather stayed with Kaoru for much longer. Even at the door he hesitated, not knowing what to say as a mere 'see you later, bye' didn't seem appropriate. Finally he swung his arms around his boyfriend's neck, initiating a deep kiss. It was imperfect still but they both enjoyed it nevertheless, clinging on to the contact.
It was teeth meeting lip, tongue aimlessly trying to find something to swipe over, but it made Kaoru's head spin nevertheless. If it went on like that, he was sure that his heart once would simply stop beating, not able to take the pressure. "Shall. I accompany you half way?" he asked, not wanting the other one to leave just like that. It felt so meaningless, so inappropriate compared to the affection he held for the redhead.
"I'd love that." Die smiled, his eyes sparkling happily and he even nodded in case the other one didn't think the words were enough to convince him. "Oh, and you can keep the cookies," he said just out of the blue, remembering the box that was still unused beside Kaoru's bed.
"Thank you." As trivial as it might have sounded, there was more to the offer than mere words could tell. Quickly, Kaoru slipped into his sneakers, grabbed his jacket and keys and left together with the redhead. The night was dark and fresh and there were only a few people crossing their way. Still, they only walked side by side, not daring to touch as both teens seemed awfully aware that nobody from their school should find out about them.
At one point Die spoke up, his voice somewhat silent but still oddly audible in the still night air. "You know... Kyo knows." He somehow felt like it was essential to inform his boyfriend about that. Despite his fears, the news didn't seem to agitate the older teen.
"He's a clever little bastard," Kaoru replied and then turned to look at Die. "He's not a gossip-monger, so there shouldn't be a problem, right?" As Die nodded, he nodded as well and they continued their way, turning into the almost dark park, only a few lanterns lighting their way. "You and he are good friends, aren't you? He told me a couple of times that you're doing stuff together." It was calming to know that Die had friends, that he lead a social life so much unlike he himself who was only living to keep up with the image of his older brother.
"Yeah, we are. We've been on the same class for ages but only now became friends this year," Die explained with a small, relieved smile as everything seemed to work out so fine right now. "He can be trusted. Although I didn't wanna tell him either but he read me too well..."
"He's good at that. Reading people, I mean." Kaoru chuckled, remembering how his cousin had a sense to always hit the right nerve and easily find somebody's weak spot. The only good thing was that Kyo usually never used his talent in a bad way. "We-," he stopped for a moment, gazing into the distance. "We aren't very close. He's leading a completely different life than I do."
Die opened his mouth to say something but then changed his mind and what he actually said was different. "Not many could lead the life you do, would have even the brains for that." His voice was soft, and it was clear that it was a compliment in its own way.
Kaoru stopped his steps, taking a hold of Die's wrist. " Let's just not get too melancholy. But I take that as a compliment." He winked at his friend, his expression brighter than just a moment before. "And I think it's better if I go back now." He hitched one eyebrow impishly, pursing his lips as if he was about to kiss the redhead.
"Yeah, you're right. You really don't wanna come back to hear the complaints my mom has in store for me since I'm so late." The redhead chuckled. Quickly he leaned closer, planting a chaste kiss on the other teen's lips. "But thanks for walking with me."
The gesture surprised Kaoru, but he chuckled at the next moment. "Tell your mom I still need you, then she might not kill you," he remarked winking, raised his hand and turned already on his heel. "We see tomorrow in school!"
"Sure thing. And don't forget that you're supposed to teach me some physics again soon," Die reminded, waving at the other one before turning to head back home. He was totally in a good mood, his steps bouncy and he was even whistling merrily as he walked home.
"Make it biology!" Kaoru shouted after him, still chuckling. His mood was brighter than it had been in ages and when he raised his hand to his mouth, he could still feel Die's lips there and it made his heart flutter with joy.
To Die's luck his mother seemed to be in a fairly good mood and she only told him he should've called her if he stayed out so long. Even when Die was lying in his bed under the blanket he couldn't sleep since he felt so utterly bouncy and happy. Whenever he closed his eyes he saw Kaoru, could practically imagine him before him, and this all made him certain that this was the real deal.
