Spring
Chapter 1: The first impression
Somehow this winter was cursed. The new year hadn't really begun yet and still it had been raining for days instead of snowing. Maybe global warming had reached Japan finally, Kaoru thought as he entered the school through the huge gate. To make things worse, his umbrella broke half way to school and now his hand was cramping as he had to hold it in a weird angle not to get soaked.
Sighing relieved when he had entered the hall finally, he shrugged off his wet raincoat and hung it into his locker. Luckily, the upper stage students had their own floor, but they shared the lockers in the gigantic entrance hall which now was crowded with dozens of black-haired students who got rid of their coats and tried to smooth down their school uniforms.
Just when Kaoru turned around to make his way to the stairs which led to the second and third floor, the third floor being the part for him and his fellow students from the upper stage, somebody shook his umbrella, opening and closing it to dry it as best as possible. A whole shower of small water drops splashed into Kaoru's face, made him yelp and, in the next moment, gripe angrily. "Look out! There's other people here too, idiot!"
A tall, red-haired boy glanced up at him surprised. He obviously hadn't noticed that Kaoru had been standing there. Distantly Kaoru remembered that the boy's name was Daisuke, everyone calling him Die though, and he was one year younger than he was. Right now the younger of the teenagers was storing his umbrella away, looking somewhat offended about the forceful reaction he had received. "Come on, take it easy. I'm sorry."
"You better be more considerate of other people. It's not like you're alone on the planet." Kaoru didn't know why, but he disliked the familiar way with which the redhead had addressed him although he was a class below him. Disgusted, he wiped his face with the sleeve of his uniform, mumbling some curses along. That day had already started wrong and now he was in an even worse mood than before. On top of that, others were staring at him, not used to the popular boy being this angry about something.
"Yeah, but apparently you think YOU are alone on the planet," the redhead shot back instantly, clearly annoyed by the other boy's words and the way he was simply ignoring the apology and going on with ranting. Deciding that this discussion was way below his standard, the older teen simply turned on his heel and marched towards the stairs. Without sparing Die even another glance, he disappeared. Clearly agitated still the redhead shot a murderous glance after the other teenager, before simply turning around and heading for his class.
That had been the first meeting of the two of them, and neither had gotten a very bright first impression. Kaoru was convinced that the younger one was a totally annoying brat, while Die thought that the other was a huge asshole with a bad attitude despite his good reputation.
*
A few days after this incident, Kaoru drove to school by bike. He didn't do that often as he usually preferred to walk there since his house wasn't far away and he enjoyed the peacefulness of the small park he had to cross to get there. Already seeing the entrance-gate, he was suddenly thrown out of the saddle, and only by chance he didn't fall to the ground. "Damnit!" Cursing, he turned his head to
see what had happened. "You again?" Die was standing next to him, holding his bike. "Now please don't tell me you didn't see me."
"I didn't, alright." The redhead frowned instantly at the hostile sound of the other's voice. "You just appeared out of nowhere when I turned the corner. Look, I'm sorry, and no one got hurt so it's okay, right?" He was itching to get going obviously, not enjoying the company.
"Out of nowhere?" The older and still smaller student stared at the other one in disbelief. "I've been driving down this STRAIGHT street and you didn't see me?" But then suddenly, he seemed to remember that he didn't want to start a discussion with the redhead and rather leave his direct proximity as soon as possible. "Whatever." With having said that, Kaoru climbed his bike again and left the startled and fuming Die behind.
So the second encounter didn't go better than the first one, not in the slightest.
Right now Die was even more determined to just hate this guy until the end of the world and ignore him whenever possible. He was still lost in his thoughts, fuming, when a hand landed on his arm and a voice startled him out of his contemplations. "You look like you're just about to kill someone soon..." The voice belonged to one of Die's classmates, a small guy who was grinning crookedly up at the redhead.
As the only answer he got was a low growl, Kyo, the small blonde, chuckled mischievously. "Well well, don't tell me about it." He wasn't particularly known for his compassion and at the next second, the reason why he had addressed Die in the first place became clear. "Got a smoke for me?"
"Ask someone else," Die shook his head instantly. "I'm in practically all sports teams in the school, what makes you think I'd smoke." Slowly he had started to walk towards the school building, taking his bike along.
The small guy rolled his eyes, releasing a theatrical sigh. "Sure, and you never ever drank beer before and certainly don't jerk off either." Shoving his hands deep into the pockets of his leather-jacket, he snickered. "I saw you smoke more than once. Don't worry, I won't blow the whistle on you."
The words made an annoyed grunt escape the redhead but he couldn't help a small grin tugging his lips. "Yeah, right." He fished a pack of cigarettes from his pocket though, offering it to the smaller man.
Eagerly, Kyo grabbed one and stored it behind his ear. "Thanks man." As Die gave him a questioning glance, he shrugged his shoulders. "For later. I don't want to get caught at school for smoking."
"Oh, I see. Make sure you've got light for it then since I won't be there to provide that later." Die winked, locking his bike as he had reached the schoolyard, and instantly continued to the building.
"I always have a lighter." The small blonde smirked and turned left while Die had to go right. "See ya in English class, right?" They had never talked much before, but only then it occurred to the redhead that he and Kyo indeed shared quite some courses.
"Sure thing, midget." Somehow the redhead couldn't help but to like the small guy somewhat, and flashed him a quick grin before going his own way. From the corners of his eyes, he could see that the other boy showed him his raised middle-finger. It was still pretty cold outside and the rain had only stopped momentarily so everybody hurried inside, trying to get warm.
*
The next days the two of them began to talk more for some reason. Suddenly Kyo took the seat next to Die in English class and as neither of them was really interested in the topic, they used a lot of their time just chatting about something irrelevant. Soon, they found out they shared the same interest in music and, while it was pretty obvious in Kyo's looks, it surprised the small teen that Die liked punkrock and hardrock as well. Sure, he had dyed his hair red, but other than that, he seemed to be quite adapted.
The better Kyo got to know him though, the better he liked the other one and soon they were sitting beside each other during every class they shared. They even started to hang out together during the breaks and their free time, Kyo soon getting to know Die's two annoying little sisters who didn't give anyone a second of peace in his home.
Die still hadn't forgotten the unlucky encounters he had had with the older student earlier and whenever he saw Kaoru somewhere this certain annoyance rose in him. He couldn't even control it, he just instantly heard the unfriendly words in his head again and it pissed him off. To his terror, he saw Kaoru enter his classroom one Tuesday before lunch-break and as it seemed, he was approaching him.
Once the older teen stood in front of Kyo though, he stopped, giving the blonde an annoyed glance. "Don't forget our date this afternoon. I don't want to listen to your mom's whining when you ditch again." That was all he said and without even sparing Die a single glance, Kaoru turned on his heel and left the room again.
"Your... date?" Die arched an eyebrow instantly, grinning at the small blonde. He was curious about that, and why his friend knew the older teen.
"More like the common 'how to torture Kyo best' day," the other one answered smirking. That didn't seem to satisfy the redhead though and as he kept on staring, Kyo chuckled. "He's my tutor. Helps me to pass english and maths and my mom adores him."
"Like about half of the school, eh?" The redhead rolled his eyes a bit, as it hadn't passed him by unnoticed how Kaoru seemed to attract attention wherever he went. "Thankfully my mom hasn't yet come up with anything like that. Although, I'm pretty likely to fail maths and physics this semester..."
"Believe me, I'd rather hang out in the mall or watch movies than to study. But my mom's adamant when it comes to that and my dad's most likely going to kill me if I fail class," Kyo explained with a theatrical expression. "But Kao's okay. Usually at least," he added, taking a sideway glance at his friend. "You don't like him much, huh?"
"I've talked to him two times and both times he wanted to rip my head off." Die flashed the other teen a crooked grin. "He's a jerk, thinks he's the top of God's creations."
"Really? Doesn't sound much like him..." Kyo pondered a moment. "Usually he's calm and controlled and never says anything to offend anybody. He's far too busy to waste his precious time by debating with others." A grin spread over his face, his lips revealing the crooked teeth underneath. "Maybe you offended his pride or so."
"I spilled water on him and almost knocked him off with my bike," the redhead admitted and hurried to add instantly. "BUT I apologized and he still told me I'm an idiot and looked at me like I was the lowest thing on earth."
"You probably caught him on a bad hair-day. Haven't you noticed how perfect his hair always is? I don't know, but I bet he's standing ages in front of the mirror before he comes to school and then you just go on and ruin it by splashing water," the blonde joked. Their idle chit-chat was cut off though was the teacher entered the room and the next lesson began.
Soon it became clear to Die that Kyo spent almost every Thursday evening with Kaoru, trying to learn things more or less desperately to pass the needed courses. They began to hang out together more though, seeing they had a similar sense of humor and they both loved to play Nintendo. When Die bought a new racing game one day they were both stuck at the redhead's home practically every afternoon from then on.
There was one downside though and that was Die's sisters. The younger one, Aino was only four years old and a happy young lady, but she had the tendency to demand everyone's attention and she was remarkably clingy. The older one, Erika was 14 and had the tendency to always overhear everything she shouldn't and be there every single moment she wasn't needed. She opened the door to her brother's room every other second, innocently asking him to borrow her some unnecessary item or telling him what their mom had said, just as an excuse to be with Die and his guest.
As puberty had struck her badly, she was moody above everything and when Die tried to throw her out of the room, she would start yelling at him and then run to their mother to complain. Luckily, Mrs Andou knew how things worked and usually admonished her to leave her older brother alone.
Mrs Andou seemed to like Kyo on top of all, considering him good company for her son since the small blonde always managed to keep up the good appearance before her. She often asked him to stay for dinner too, and this day was no exception. Mr Andou was out of town on a business trip and so Mrs Andou had arranged the meal in the living room that time. When Kyo and Die finally appeared from the latter's room, she instantly turned to smile at them. "The dinner's ready in a moment. Would you stay to eat, Kyo?"
Instantly, a deep frown appeared on the blonde's forehead and one could see that he was thinking for a moment. Finally though, he shook his head. "I'm sorry Mrs Andou. It smells delicious, but I have to get going. I'm already late for my coaching lesson." He gave her his best apologetic smile and Die a pout. The redhead knew that Kyo would rather stay for dinner, never declining something good to eat, but his mom would probably castrate him if he skipped yet another lesson with Kaoru.
"Your coaching lesson?" Die's mother seemed to be more than interested, her eyes widening a bit. She set the bowl down from her hands to turn to look at the smaller teen of the two who were standing before her. "Oh, if you don't mind me asking, how long have you been taking those? I was thinking of something like that for my son." She gave the frowning redhead a glance. "And I'd appreciate any info on it."
Kyo threw an even more apologetic glance at his friend, but then turned to answer Mrs Andou's question. "I take them since summer, because my mom thought my grades need desperate improvement," he tried to joke. Hesitating a moment and inwardly hoping that Die would forgive him, he offered. "Should I ask Kaoru if he has time to help Die out too?"
"That would be lovely, thank you." Mrs Andou's smile widened and she looked definitely pleased, totally ignoring the way her son already opened his mouth to protest. "If you're seeing him today, please ask him. Die would need improvement on his grades desperately too, I'm sure he agrees."
Kyo chuckled, but Mrs Andou didn't think it was because he strongly disagreed with her last comment. "Of course I will. Thank you for the cookies earlier, but I have to run now." With a slight bow, he turned around and looked at his tall friend who stood there like petrified, obviously still thinking about replying something to his mother. "Die, will you get me to the door?"
The redhead looked a bit dumbfounded still but finally snapped back to reality and hurried after his friend. Once they were at the door he instantly gave the smaller teen a glare, hissing lowly. "What the heck were you thinking!? I don't want HIM to teach me anything! I don't want ANYONE to tutor me but the least of them all, him."
"Easy." Kyo made a soothing handgesture. "Just let me handle things and you won't have to take any coaching lessons at all. Kaoru is so busy, he certainly won't take anyone anymore; ESPECIALLY not when I ask him and when it's you." Obviously, the older teen had dropped remarks about the redhead too when he had been alone with Kyo. "So, I will just tell your mom that there's no way, but that he promised me to ask around and contact me in case somebody would like to coach you. Of course, nobody will ever do that and she will probably forget about it after some time."
"You really think so?" Die looked somewhat suspicious still, but clearly relieved nevertheless. "And you're totally sure that he will be too busy and won't do it in the need for some money?"
"He already hardly has time for the student council and for his art course. Believe me, he won't take you in. Besides," Kyo grinned toothily, "I just overheard him decline somebody just because of that. So no worries."
"Alright, I'll trust you with it then." The redhead agreed with a small sigh, nodding. "You seem to know a lot about his stuff. I suppose it's normal though since he tutors you so often..."
"Well yeah." Kyo laughed heartily. "And the fact that he's the son of my father's sister helps that fact. So he's pissed that he doesn't get any money for tutoring me, because his mom of course wouldn't allow it..."
"He's related to you!?" Die's eyes opened wide and he stared at the small blonde. "Why did you never tell me!?"
"You never asked." Kyo shrugged casually. "Besides, I don't think it's that important. He's only my cousin."
"But cousins are CLOSELY related and I've been fuming to you about him so often! How should I know that you're not just running to tell everything to him?" The redhead chuckled, clearly not that agitated anymore and trying to lighten the mood.
"Because I am having my own problems with him..." The blonde laughed heartily. "You should try being related to Mr. Perfect and hear about his good deeds during every damn family meeting. That's annoying, believe me." He shook his head, still chuckling. "But hey, I really gotta go if I wanna keep my nuts." Quickly, he slipped into his shoes and grabbed his jacket, raising his right arm to bid farewell shouting, "Don't worry about the lessons. I'll handle that."
*
Sadly, he couldn't keep his promise, because everything came different than planned. That day, he had to go to Kaoru's house and his mother overheard his request to teach Die and help him pass maths and physics and maybe history too. His cousin had already declined, his voice chilly when he had heard the name alone, but Mrs Niikura, Kyo's aunt and Kaoru's mother had heard it and interfered, admonishing her son.
"Kaoru, didn't Kazuki just stop taking lessons with you? Where's the problem to help Daisuke then? After all, he's a friend of Kyo and you should do that as a favor to him." The blonde hurried to ensure that it was okay, but Mrs. Niikura didn't want to hear that. So now Kyo had the duty to inform Die about his 'luck'.
As easily predicted, Die went on a total rampage as he heard about the news. Luckily, his mother wasn't there and he threw his sisters out of the room, ignoring Erika's loud protests completely. "You TOLD me he'd refuse! Are you now trying to tell me that I'm gonna be stuck with that jerk!?" He was clearly frustrated, almost ready to hit walls.
Kyo hung his head, honestly sorry. "Hey, I couldn't know that my aunt would force him to coach you, could I? She heard everything and practically forced Kaoru to squeeze you into his schedule. Be sure that he was just as pissed as you are now."
"Something good at least." Die rolled his eyes. "I could tell mom that he didn't agree on that and I'd be able to fend it off, but now Erika heard everything and guess twice if she'll go tell mom everything or not!?" He plopped to sit down on the edge of his bed, releasing a huge sigh.
"Can't you bribe her?" the blonde asked hopefully, but then shook his head. "Wouldn't do much good. My aunt will force Kaoru to call your mom and tell her the free dates and how much it'll cost and such. She'll get to know it anyways."
"What bad did I do to deserve this mess?" The redhead had smoothly gone from angry-mode to self pity, his tone of voice whining. "I don't wanna..."
"Face it like a man," Kyo admonished him, rolling his eyes. "I have to endure this too, you know. But at least I can tell you he's a good teacher, if that helps at all."
"A good teacher who hates my guts," Die pointed out, frowning. "Maybe he won't have much time for tutoring me at least. Once a month would be totally sufficient." He pulled his legs up to his chest, basing his chin on his knee.
"You don't give him enough credit, Die. He's not a monster and usually very calm and professional. You'll see, once you get to know him better, he's easy to get along with. That is," the blonde snickered, "if you can get past that everybody sees him as perfection itself. The perfect son, student, nephew, tutor, son-in-law and whatever."
"Great, so one more thing to be compared to." The redhead rolled his eyes again but couldn't hold back a small chuckle this time. "And we'll see. I'm willing to bet he'll rip my head off the first time we meet. But let's hope for the best nevertheless..."
"At least the girls will now notice you," his friend tried to cheer him up; not that the girls hadn't acknowledged Die before too. "They are envious and rumors are that some deliberately dropped their grades only to be coached by him…"
