Pairing: Kaoru x Die
Disclaimer: I do NOT own any of the persons mentioned in this nor have any connections with them. I do NOT get any money from this, and it's written solely for entertainment purposes meaning no harm.
Comments: I'm writing fluff again^^ I only had one line for this in the beginning, but it turned out to be a whole fic. Hehe, nothing much really happens in it, but I tried to get some happy feelings in it. I hope that I succeeded even remotely.
Oh, and the comment about the bird flu is originally pi_ankh’s. She had this terrible cold in the autumn and she was complaining about it and that thing kind of staid alive^^ She wanted me to credit her for using it^^

A Cold

The morning sun lightened the whole room and caused the leader of Dir en grey to wake up. Actually, the reason for him waking up wasn’t the happy sunshine, but a hammering headache and difficulties to breathe. Kaoru sat upright in the bed, but kept his eyes closed trying to force the headache to disappear. He pondered for a while if he should call the others and tell them to take a day off. Then he happened to remember their upcoming TV-appearance in only a week and decided that they really needed all the practice they could get.

Kaoru rummaged through his closet, trying to find something to wear. He didn’t feel like going to practice at all, but his stubbornness didn’t allow him to give up just yet. He could still walk, and that was enough so they could go through with practice that day. He cursed when the shelf decided to fall down and a heap of once neatly folded clothes covered him. Kaoru didn’t often cry out of frustration, but this was the kind of moment that caused tears of annoyance to form in his eyes. However, due to the accident he did find the shirt he was looking for.

The drive to the studio was hell, since he had to pull over every now and then so he could get over his coughing. After what might have been forever he arrived at practice, ten minutes late. Ten minutes isn’t a lot, but when it comes to the leader of Dir en grey it was like years. When he walked into the studio he was greeted by four pairs of confused eyes. Toshiya was plucking at his bass while talking with Kyo, both sitting on the couch. Shinya was sitting behind his drums and reading some sort of magazine.

As soon as Kaoru had opened the door, Die had jumped up from the floor where he was sitting and headed for the lead guitarist smiling broadly. They had been dating for a few weeks now, and that night they’d agreed to go and watch a movie together. But judging by the way Kaoru’s head was hammering, he concluded that he’d have to cancel no matter how much he wanted to spend time with the redhead. “Morning, Kao.” The bandleader was greeted happily. He looked straight at the rhythm guitarist and tried to smile a bit. All he was able to create was a quite pitiful small smirk, but Die didn’t seem to care, he only kissed the older man softly when he was near enough.

“Die? I’m sorry, but I’ll have to cancel the movie thing tonight. I’m not feeling very well.” A shadow of concern crossed the younger man’s face. “Is it serious?” Kaoru shook his head and tried to smile again. “No, just a bit of a cold I think.” He shrugged. Then he told everyone to get their instruments so that the practice could begin and went off to get his own guitar. Die stood still for a while, looking worriedly at the retreating back of the older man.

After about two hours of incompetent playing Kaoru decided that he needed a break. “Okay guys, let’s take five.” He sneezed violently and plopped down on an amp. Kyo and Toshiya both disappeared outside to have a smoke. Kaoru’s headache was returning with its full force, and the bandleader hung his head down before closing his eyes, trying to concentrate on defeating the pain. “Kao, you alright?” Hearing the soft voice call him, Kaoru raised his gaze and found himself staring straight at the redheaded rhythm guitarist’s worried face. “Yeah.” He nodded weakly, trying to sound convincing.

Die reached out his hand to move aside a strand of hair that had fallen on Kaoru’s face. His fingertips brushed slightly over the burning skin and he flinched slightly. “Dammit, Kaoru! You really are hot!” “Well, thank you.” Kaoru snorted between his coughs. The younger man rolled his eyes, but a small smile was caressing his lips. “Not like that. I mean you’ve got a fever.” He placed his palm against the other’s cheek. “How long have you been sick?”

The bandleader sneezed before averting his gaze to stare at the floor. “I woke up with it this morning.” He tried to stand up, but his legs gave in under him and he fell backwards. Die however caught his thin frame with ease and helped him to gain his balance. Kaoru looked at the other guitarist. “I’m fine. Really. Let’s just continue.” The redhead frowned and shook his head. “Nope. You’re supposed to be at home sleeping that off.”

“But the practice…” Kaoru tried to protest weakly. It was hard to sound convincing while he was leaning against the younger man unable to stand by himself. Die snorted a bit angrily. “Screw the practice! I’m taking you home.” The bandleader opened his mouth, still not agreeing, but the redhead was faster. “No buts.” He said firmly before turning a little to face their slender drummer. “Shin, I’m taking Kaoru home. Could you tell the others that the practice is cancelled for today. Hell, make it cancelled tomorrow too.”

“Die! You’re not supposed to…” Kaoru had to cut his sentence short because of a fit of coughs. Die still held him gently, and stroke his back soothingly. After regaining the control over his breathing the lead guitarist continued weakly. “…make decisions like that on your own.” Shinya smiled at the older man, amused by the way he always wanted to be the great leader. “But think about it, Kaoru. Die’s right, you’re in no condition to work right now. Go home and get better.” Die flashed a grateful smile at the drummer before picking Kaoru up in his arms. “Hey!” The bandleader yelped out of surprise and clutched the redhead’s shirt, afraid that he’d fall to the floor.

Die’s hold on Kaoru was strong, and he managed to carry the older man to his car without any troubles. The drive was silent, only the older man’s sneezing and coughing broke the silence every once in a while. Kaoru was feeling too miserable for idle chitchat and Die was too worried about the older man to figure out anything smart to say. When they arrived at Kaoru’s apartment, Die walked around the car intending to carry the lead guitarist inside like he’d carried him before. But Kaoru was already standing on his own and refused to get any help.

Kaoru looked really determined and started to stagger towards the front door. “I’m not a child and I’m not dying. So let me keep my dignity and walk with my own two feet.” Die smiled and followed the other, ready to catch him if he seemed to lose his balance. Kaoru reached the door without falling and opened it with his key. Both guitarists took off their shoes and headed further inside the apartment, the younger one following the older like a shadow.

The lead guitarist was in no condition to even walk properly, and soon he had to allow Die to support him. Together they headed towards the bedroom, so that Kaoru could finally get to sleep. But when they were next to the bathrooms door Kaoru stopped moving. “I need a shower.” He mumbled and looked expectantly at the redhead waiting for him to follow. He didn’t trust his own walking abilities anymore. Obediently Die changed directions and stepped into the bathroom. He helped Kaoru to sit down on the edge of a big white bathtub. The older man tried to get up aiming for the shower, but Die held him down.

“I need a shower.” Kaoru repeated but Die shook his head and turned the tap on. The bathtub slowly started fill with warm water. “No, Kao, you’re going to have a bath.” Kaoru gave the younger one a puzzled look, not really understanding what was going on in the others mind. “Whaat? Why?” Die began to take off Kaoru’s garments one by one. First to go were his socks, and when the redhead was tugging on the older one’s shirt, he decided to explain. “See, Kao, I have my reasons. You are filthy, you won’t be able to stand alone in the shower, I don’t need a shower and you have that ridiculous bathtub there without anyone using it.”

The lead guitarist began to understand, although there were still huge amounts of phlegm stuck in his brain. He nodded, and at the same time shivered when a cold wave hit him. “So… cold…” He stuttered before sneezing again. Die had folded Kaoru’s shirt neatly and was now unzipping his jeans. “You’ll get warm when I get you into the water.” The older one only nodded and wrapped his arms around himself to gain a little bit of warmth. In the meantime the redhead had gotten rid of every piece of clothing the older one had worn. Images were running incoherently in Kaoru’s mind, and then one thought became clearer than the others and he felt like he had to voice it out loud.

Thus Kaoru pouted seriously. “Why don’t you ever bathe me when I would be able to…” Die looked at the other questioningly. “Able to..?” The lead guitarist turned his eyes away to examine the wall and blushed slightly. “You know, enjoy it properly.” The redhead chuckled heartily. He took the older man into his arms carefully and placed him into the tub. The warm water encircled Kaoru’s body, and he felt his muscles start to relax. The warmth spread itself inside of his body too, when Die looked at him affectionately with those deep eyes of his and promised. “I’ll bathe you whenever you want me to.”

The rhythm guitarist soaped and scrubbed the other thoroughly, taking his time. It was nice to be able to run his hands along the other’s skin and clean him all over. Besides, the warm water seemed to do Kaoru good and make him feel better. The older man was soon lulled into somewhere between awake and asleep, and he fully concentrated on the nice feeling. For a short moment he even forgot that he was aching everywhere and suffering from the cold of the century.

All too soon Die was ready, and lifted the other up to sit on the edge of the bathtub. He took a big and fluffy towel and dried the other before wrapping another towel around him. Kaoru seemed to be falling asleep already. Die lifted him up to his arms once again and headed for the bandleader’s bedroom. Kaoru rested his head against the other’s chest and pressed himself closer, still seeking for warmth. It felt so good to be that near.

Carefully Die dropped his precious burden on the edge of the bed and dragged the covers aside. He helped Kaoru to lay down and then covered him with all the blankets he could find. The bandleader sneezed and managed to worsen his headache at the same time. “This is some fucking bird flu, I swear! And the light hurts my eyes.” Kaoru groaned and covered his eyes with his hand. Die went to the window and closed the curtains. “You can open your eyes now. I’ll fetch you something to eat.” The blonde man quickly rose up to a seated position but soon realized it was a mistake. He coughed for a long while before sinking back against the pillows.

“I’m not hungry.” The redhead smiled at the other motherly. “That doesn’t matter. You’re still going to eat.” Kaoru pouted and hugged the covers closer to his shivering form. “You dictator.” Die only grinned and disappeared through the doorway. As soon as the older man was left alone he closed his eyes and focused on getting rid of the headache. He smiled to himself, thoughts of Die making dinner filling his mind and making him laugh a bit. The redhead would probably burn everything he’d try to cook. Kaoru didn’t feel so bad anymore. That didn’t mean that the cold had gotten any better, it was just that he wasn’t as grumpy as before.

It didn’t take long before Die reappeared, carrying a tray with a big bowl of soup and some water. “Ta da! Now eat.” He grinned happily and helped Kaoru to sit up before placing the tray on his lap. The lead guitarist obediently took the spoon and began to gulp down the soup. It tasted surprisingly good. Heavenly in fact, as far as Kaoru could tell with the cold numbing his senses. When he’d finished, Die took the tray and discarded it onto the bedside table. Then he gave Kaoru a glass of water and a painkiller. The older man almost voiced a comment about Die trying to drug him, but decided against it. He swallowed the pill and rested once again against the pillows.

“So Die, where did you get that soup from?” Die sat on the edge of the bed and arched a curious eyebrow. “I made it myself. Don’t you have faith in me, Kao?” The older one snorted before bursting out into another fit of coughs and frantic sneezes. After he had gained control over his breathing he looked at the other one. “You can’t fool me, Die. Come on, out with it.” Die drummed the blanket next to Kaoru’s foot and coughed a little, looking embarrassed. “Well, your neighbour, you know the old lady, made it when I told her you were sick.”

Kaoru laughed and patted Die’s arm. “Don’t worry. I still appreciate what you’re doing for me.” The redhead blushed a little and flashed his trademark grin. “No problem.” He stood up, took the tray and headed for the kitchen. On the doorway he turned around and smiled at Kaoru again. “Try to get some sleep. I’ll wash the dishes.” Kaoru smiled thankfully and turned to his side closing his eyes. It didn’t take very long before he drifted off to sleep.

The lead guitarist woke up and his mouth was dry. He reached for the glass of water that was on the nightstand. Then a hand appeared out of nowhere and gave the glass to him. Kaoru drank huge gulps before raising his gaze. The younger guitarist was standing beside the bed and smiled down at the bandleader. Kaoru had thought that the other had left when he fell asleep so he knitted his eyebrows and asked sharply: “Why are you still here?”

Feeling the other’s piercing gaze on him Die blushed. “I… I just wanted to take care of you.” Kaoru couldn’t help but smile at the sweet sentiment. “C’mere.” he said and raised his hands as an inviting gesture. Die seemed to hesitate for a second, but then he took the few steps that were between them. He reached out to touch Kaoru’s forehead to see if the older man still had fever, but when his hand was about to reach its destination Kaoru grabbed his wrist stopping the movement.

Die was puzzled and flinched a little. Was he crossing some invisible line? They had been dating for few weeks now, but Die wasn’t sure if the older man wanted to appear this fragile in front of him. Kaoru didn’t like being helpless, maybe he was mad at Die for treating him like a child. His fear was somewhat relieved when Kaoru smiled. “I want you to take care of me.” There it was. The first time in Kaoru’s life that he allowed himself to be helpless in front of another human being. At first Die wasn’t sure if he’d heard correctly, but then he let a soft smile form on his lips. He looked affectionately at his bandleader and cupped Kaoru’s cheek gently.

The blonde man closed his eyes enjoying the touch. Die leaned closer and ghosted his lips shortly over the other’s forehead. No sound escaped either one of them, but Kaoru moved his fingers from Die’s wrist to entangle their fingers. The younger guitarist seated himself beside the older one and circled his free arm around the other’s waist. Leaning even closer to each other they enjoyed the shared warmth.

Kaoru woke up with a flinch from a feverish nightmare. He felt a protective arm circled around his waist and a warm body pressed near his own. The beating of his heart calmed down as he leaned closer. He ran his fingers along the chest he was leaning on. It felt so safe and warm there in Die’s arms. He was actually beginning to be glad that he caught a cold. That made the bandleader laugh at his own thoughts. Getting sick is a good thing? Hardly. But he had to admit that at that moment he didn’t mind the headache or the runny nose.

He felt Die shift a little, and soon the redhead opened his eyes. “Uhm, what time is it?” Kaoru hugged Die closer and murmured against the other’s shirt. “Six thirty. We slept for almost two hours.” The younger guitarist yawned before raising his hand to ruffle the blonde’s hair. “Do you think you can manage if I go home to get some of my stuff?” Kaoru had to yawn too, although he didn’t feel particularly tired. “Your stuff? What do you have in mind?”

“I’m going to move in for a few days, so I can look after you. We do need our lead guitarist, so I’d better make sure that you’ll live through this.” The redhead gave the other a quick peck on the lips and looked him questioningly in the eye. Kaoru thought about what the other had just said. Then a thought crossed his mind.

“Why don’t you pack everything you need.” Die arched his eyebrow, looking puzzled. Although he didn’t say a thing the older one continued. “Well, now that you’re going to move in for a while anyway, why not stay for good? There’s plenty of room here, and then you wouldn’t have to carry your things over every time I get sick.” He smiled at the redhead nervously, and a bunch of butterflies danced around in his stomach. Had he gone too far? But then Die smiled. “I’ll be sure to take everything I need.” He leaned in and kissed Kaoru briefly before getting up and heading for the door.

“Just try to stay alive while I’m gone.” Die winked and left. Kaoru snuggled against the pillows, pulling the covers on himself to stop him from feeling so cold. His nose was running and his head still hurt, but being sick wasn’t so bad at all. He closed his eyes and sighed happily, waiting for his redhead to come home.

Their home.

Soon the sleep took over his exhausted body and he fell into beautiful dreams.
