Rivalry

It was a typical Monday, except that they had just had a longer break from working and now returned from a holiday of a couple of weeks. During that time, Kaoru had decided he could try decorating his face with a chin beard, to see if it would fit him or not. He wasn’t quite certain if the beard would stay, or if he would rather shave it off. He was planning on making the decision during the few following days.

He didn’t need to wait long though. When he walked into the rehearsal room, Kyo and Die were already there, standing beside the table, obviously discussing something that had to do with the pile of paper the vocalist was holding in his hands. When they spotted Kaoru they both turned, Kyo greeting him with a nod while Die instantly flashed a smile and spoke up.

”Hey Kao, you look different! You grew a beard!” The redhead arched an eyebrow, obviously scanning his friend’s appearance thoroughly. Kaoru simply nodded, and after seeing the delighted look in his fellow guitarist’s eyes he decided that the beard would stay.

”It looks really good on you, Kao.” Die smiled while turning around, winking at the older guitarist from over his shoulder. “I like beards.” Yes, the beard would definitely stay. This time Kaoru was hundred percent certain of it.

I like beards.

The redhead didn’t even notice the two sets of eyes boring into his back when he walked away, completely unaware of the thoughts that were running through the minds of his two bandmates. He probably would’ve been totally oblivious even when he had seen the looks, discarding them as odd behaviour from his friends rather than something else. Little did he know about what was going on in reality.

Two weeks after that they again had a longer break and when they came back to work Kyo returned with a beard.

That was when Toshiya began to notice that something was a little off, as the vocalist had never even mentioned he might want to grow a beard, neither that he liked them. Quite the contrary, he had always kept his face nice and smooth, clearly showing that he preferred it that way. But now one single comment from Die and there it was; a nice chin beard, much like Kaoru’s.

A cunning plan started to form in the bassist’s mind as he sat in the corner of the studio, cackling silently to himself while weaving the web of mischief.

The following day Toshiya saw both Kyo and Kaoru retreat to smoke a cigarette on the rooftop, while Die, who usually accompanied them, seemed to head off to the close by market to buy something to eat. Probably sweets, the redhead was known for occasionally needing his dosage of chocolate. That left a perfect opportunity for the bassist though, and hurriedly he joined his two friends at the smoking area.

For a moment they were chatting idly, before Toshiya dropped a casual remark.

“I heard Die say that he thinks tattoos are fucking sexy.”

That resulted in two sets of eyes directed straight at him, a heavy silence landing in the midst of the smoking bunch. The only sounds one could hear were the sounds of the traffic and the city down below. It was Kyo who spoke up first, aiming for a casual tone but not able to cover the slight tremble in his voice. “That so?” Kaoru was pretending not to even listen to the conversation, but one could see the certain sparkle in his eyes that made sure he was listening, very carefully.

“Yeah,” Toshiya nodded, stubbing the remains of his cigarette. “Especially these whole-arm sleeves, you know. No skin, just a huge-ass tattoo covering everything. He said that he can’t take one since seeing something like that gets him all hot.”

Knowing that his words had had an impact, the bassist hid his grin and turned around to go back inside, leaving his two friends behind to probably nervously smoke a whole pack of cigarettes while they were at it.

Some months later Die came to Toshiya, asking him if he had any idea where this sudden urge for their two bandmembers to get more and more tattoos was coming from. Both Kyo and Kaoru had a full sleeve tattooed by then, more coming with each opportunity they were given.

Toshiya just shrugged, blinking innocently, and carefully hid his grin.
