Descendants of Darkness
Chapter 3

Although the sun was shining, Toshiya was freezing. If it was because of the temperature or nervousness, he couldn't tell. At least he didn't have to fear to bump into a vampire at this time of the day until he would try his luck and sneak into the unimpressive old house where he suspected the redhead had his hideout. He was all alone, hadn't even told Shinya about this, but was determined to pull it through. Afterwards, when he could prove that he had been right with saying that this one vampire wasn't pure evil, he would let his friend in on this.

When he had reached his destination, he first dug out a cigarette, needing the smoke to gather the needed courage. What if the dark-haired vampire with the beard was there as well and discovered his intrusion? Anyways, it was too late to back off and play coward. Very much to his own surprise, the door was neither locked nor protected in any way, swinging open easily after turning the handle.

Silently, as quiet as he was able to, he sneaked forward and made his way into the building. He was sure that his heartbeat was loud enough for every creature within miles to hear, and cold sweat was rising on his forehead. He forced himself to go on though, swallowing his fear. The first rooms turned out to be empty, and he was almost about to give up.

For a long moment, he stood at the stairs which led to the first floor, another one descending to the basement. After taking a deep breath, he decided to go to the first floor as the mere thought of sneaking around in a dark, cold cellar gave him the creeps already.

He wasn't lucky though since the first floor was as empty as the rest of the house and there was nothing that gave away if there even was any living creature inside. His heart sank and he tried to suppress his fear as best as possible while he finally climbed down the stairs to the basement.

Carefully, he pushed the door open and first peeked around the corner. There was no sound, simply nothing but darkness. Cursing himself that he hadn't taken a flashlight with him, he still made his way along the corridor and opened the first door on his way. There was nobody still, but the room didn't suit his imagination of an unfriendly muggy vampire-crypt. The wall was coloured in dark red and in the centre of the room was a gigantic bed that practically begged to be tested. Yet, Toshiya didn't dare and instead turned around to go on with his search.

Just when he was about to silently close the door behind himself again, there was a movement, just a whiff of wind, something changing in the atmosphere. The next moment, his throat was grabbed firmly and he choked.

"Look what we've got here. Practical. Food delivery service," a low voice sounded. But then, the vampire seemed to recognize him and released a throaty chuckle. "Die! You've got a visitor."

"What the heck are you babbling about?" The tall redhead appeared from the next room, looking utterly suspicious. As his gaze fell upon the human, he froze for a split second, but it only took a moment and he was grinning confidently again, stepping closer and even chuckling lowly. "Aww, isn't this sweet? Wanted to come and thank me for saving your life?"

Kaoru grinned and gave Toshiya an ungentle shove, causing him to stumble towards the redhead. "Sweet, but dangerous. What if he hadn't come alone?" he asked in an admonishing way. "Take care of him. He's your responsibility now." Without waiting for a reply, the smaller vampire turned around and vanished somewhere in the dark.

For a long moment Die just stood there and stared at the human who was shivering slightly, obviously scared. When he spoke up his voice was harsh, but there was something like curiosity in it. "So? What do you think you're doing?"

"I-," Toshiya swallowed to steady his voice, his throat burning from the other vampire's grasp. Suddenly, he had no idea anymore how he could've been so stupid to come and seek a vampire in his hideout. Still, he began again. "I came here to find you." He thought the redhead would see straight through him anyway if he lied.

"That much I already figured out, thank you." The sarcasm was clear in the redhead's voice and he rolled his eyes, shaking his head a bit. In a smooth movement he sat down on the bed's edge though, keeping his eyes locked on the human a few feet away from him. "Why?"

"I don't know." It was the truth even as all reason had escaped the tall black-haired human. "Maybe because I thought... I mean since you let me go," he babbled, taking a few steps backwards since he wasn't sure if it wouldn't be more clever to run.

"Since I let you go?" Die arched an eyebrow, but despite that he looked totally casual, his eyes were piercing the human, seeing straight through him. "Do you think it means I'm going to protect you from other vampires too now?" He was clearly amused, a small grin dancing on his lips.

"Yeah ... no, I mean, well, I-," Toshiya was confused. The redhead's stare caused ice-cold shivers to run down his spine, making him tremble. Suddenly, he became aware that he had been walking into the lion's den and that there was a good chance that he wouldn't make it out of there alive. "Will you kill me now?" he asked, his voice faint, almost inaudible.

For a short moment there was silence, not a single sound audible in the room. It was cut by a single word from the redhaired vampire. "No." The creature paused, but after Toshiya's eyes snapped up again he went on. "I won't kill you now."

"So-," the young man raised his gaze and yet didn't dare to look the vampire straight in the eyes, "does that mean I'm free to go?" He couldn't help but to cast a short glance at the creature's lips, his hair that framed his face like the dying embers of a fire, dark red. The sight made his heart beat faster again and suddenly he remembered why he had come there, why it had been worth to take the risk of being killed.

"Yes," Die drawled, a grin dancing on his lips. "But wouldn't it be wise to first tell me why you came here? The truth." He went on, very well noticing the expression in the young man's eyes. He had years and years of practice in reading people and their emotions, so he was pretty certain he had seen what he thought.

Out of a fit of sudden courage, Toshiya stepped closer to the vampire on the bed, biting his bottom lip. "I-," again he hesitated, but then reached out his hand to touch the creature's cheek, flinching a bit as he felt the coldness of the skin. "I came here because I know you're different than the others."

The vampire didn't seem to mind the touch, his expression never changing as he kept on smiling and gazing the other man deep in the eye. "Different?" There was certain softness in his voice, unlike the almost harsh tone he had used earlier.

"You're not pure evil," the other man spoke his thoughts and quickly withdrew his hand as he noticed his fingertips were still lingering on the vampire's skin. "You let me go."

"What if I had my reasons? What if I wanted to hunt you down?" Die tilted his head slightly, based his hands on the mattress, leaning a bit backwards.

"Then I wouldn't stand before you now," Toshiya stated firmly and took another step forward until his knees hit the edge of the bed.

"It looks that you have it all figured out..." The vampire pursed his lips slightly, giving an appreciative nod. He was very well aware of the human's eyes on him and made sure to shift slightly to look even more irresistible.

It made Toshiya's heart beat quicker until he felt it in his throat and he was itching to touch the creature again. There was something utterly fascinating in the redhead, something that made it almost impossible to tear his eyes away from him.

"You came here because I'm different." Die spoke up softly, without making a move and kept his eyes fixed on the human's. "Now you're here. What are you going to do?" He sounded even unnaturally friendly, something soft in his tone and in the look in his eyes.

"I don't know." Toshiya shook his head slowly, but already based one knee on the bed's edge. Tentatively, he shifted until he was kneeling between the redheaded vampire's legs. "I think I'm asking you to keep me, to protect me."

The friendly tone in the other one's voice only fastened his belief that the vampire wasn't pure evil and it let him hope that he had some feelings for him too as Toshiya had to admit that he was rapidly falling for the other man and his supernatural charm.

"Keep you?" Die looked at the human for a moment seriously, like making sure he had heard it right. "I can't protect you against all the other vampires." He shook his head a bit. And it was true, even if Kaoru agreed to help him, which wasn't very likely, he wouldn't be able to keep other vampires away from the human forever.

"But I could hide here, stay with you at least during the days and go back to my house at nights," the young man suggested. "I know how to protect myself and I'm not expecting anything from you."

His heart was still pounding madly as he leaned forward and breathed a soft, chaste kiss on the creature's lips. It wasn't the truth though, because in reality he was hoping the redheaded vampire would return his feelings and maybe even try to protect him.

Die didn't even try to pull back and if the human's senses didn't fail him, he even leaned a bit more into the kiss. "You would be there during the day when I'm asleep. And away in the night when I'm awake." Die spoke softly, practically only breathing out the words against the other man's lips. "It wouldn't make sense."

"Does it mean you would want me to be there while you're awake?" Toshiya's heart had stopped beating when he had felt the vampire lean in a tiny bit, almost unnoticeably. Still, it was enough to give him the courage to shift closer. "It wouldn't be your loss.”

"You forget about the other vampires." The redhead reminded, leaned backwards, noticing contently that the human followed the movement. "They're awake when I am. Just go home."

"You could tell them I'm yours," the young man suggested, a glimpse of hope flaring up in his eyes. "Don't you have a code that makes you respect other's property?" Up until that day he had been dreaming about the redheaded vampire, had fantasized about him in a romantic way, but being so close to him made him forget all rationality as if he was acting under a spell.

"No." The answer came along with a small headshake. "Every human is free prey for everyone." Die looked the young man in the eye, and for the first time during their conversation, he brought up his hand to touch his cheek slightly with his fingertips. "You can't stay with me. But if you're brave enough, you can stop by at times."

Automatically, Toshiya's eyes closed and he enjoyed the soft touch although it caused gooseflesh to rise on his skin due to the coldness in it. When he looked up, he held the other one's gaze and nodded slightly. "I am brave and I will come back."

Biting his bottom lip shyly, he straddled the vampire's hips, sitting down on his lap. "Is it time to leave already?" he asked whispering and tried to give his voice a clearly suggestive undertone.

The question was answered with a low chuckle and a smile spread on the redhead's lips. He moved his hand from Toshiya's cheek to his hair, tangling his fingers in the strands. "You are brave indeed..." He used his free hand to slide it down the human's back, pulling him against himself in the movement.

Toshiya's heart was beating frantically and when the vampire's lips sealed his own, he was sure that it'd burst his chest.

Kaoru watched the scene for a few moments, leaning against the doorframe with his arms folded across his chest. Neither the human nor his companion had noticed his appearance until he spoke up finally. "Will you go out hunting or is he our supper?" One couldn't quite tell what was going on in his mind, but there was a slightly amused smile dancing on his lips.

"He's not to be touched." Die's eyes snapped up to meet the other vampire's gaze, and there was a certain even harsh undertone in his voice. "He can come and go freely."

***

A few days later, Toshiya was sitting on his best friend's couch, biting his fingernails nervously. He just had to tell Shinya about the happenings as it threatened to burst him if he kept the information to himself.

He had been at the vampire's hideout only one time after their first meeting there, but hadn't been lucky. Probably, Die and this Kaoru had been sleeping somewhere else. Anyways, he was still high on the first meeting and how it had turned out, determined to prove his friend that he had been right in assuming that Die was different from other vampires.

A long silence followed after he had ended his explanations throughout which Shinya had been listening silently, shocked, but now he raised his eyebrows. "See, I told you he wouldn't kill me."

"You can't know that." Shinya looked pretty desperate, seeing that his friend hadn't listened to his advices at all and had done just the opposite to what he had promised. "Maybe he enjoys toying with you and will slash your throat the next time you go there. Or maybe you bump into another vampire who won't be as 'nice and gentle' as he is." He rolled his eyes at the adjectives, not really believing that the vampire had any of those qualities.

"But he kissed me and he told this other one, Kaoru, that I'm free to come and go as I wish. It didn't look like he was very pleased with the order." Toshiya argued stubbornly. "And who knows, with time he might protect me even from the others."

"Tosh, even if he wanted to, he's a single vampire and can't win against a bunch of his kind. He can't promise you protection." The blonde man sighed, placing his hand on his friend's shoulder. "You sound like a teenaged girl talking about the love her life."

"What if I am in love?" the young man asked, swallowing hard against the sudden dry feeling in his throat. It was true, he had fallen for the vampire and no matter what his friend said, he was sure Die mirrored the feelings to a certain extent. Of course, he couldn't show it, but he was sure there was something at least.

"Tosh!" Shinya had expected something like that but it was still a shock to hear it straight out. "You can't be serious! You can't fall in love with a freak like that! Tell me you're joking."

"He's not a freak. Okay," the blackhaired man sighed, "I admit that he's different and I don't expect him to love me back as much as I do. Still, there's something, affection, and I friggin' KNOW that he likes me. It's probably this other vampire, Kaoru, who's making things harder. He seems to have a certain influence on Die."

"Toshiya, he doesn't love you. Creatures like that aren't capable of loving anyone." The blonde man was desperate, trying to search for his friend's gaze. "Please, please don't go back there anymore. You're just going to get yourself killed if you go on like this."

"Shinya, I know what I'm doing and I appreciate your concern, but I just can't promise that." Toshiya shook his head. "You can't be sure. Even if they all are ill in mind, it doesn't mean that there are no exceptions. Believe me," he took his friend's hand in his own, squeezing it slightly, "I know what I'm saying, what I felt and there was no hatred, no evilness between us."

"He's a vampire. He's going to be your death." Shinya sighed, he knew the battle was already lost. "Has he done ANYTHING at all to prove you he's sincere?"

For a moment, Toshiya hesitated, looking his friend straight in the eyes. But then, he nodded convinced. "He told his friend to leave me alone. Don't you think that's a proof for his sincerity? And he also told me that he can't protect me against other vampires and that I should better leave. That shows he cares."

"It shows he wants you to believe his sincerity." The other man stated, but didn't seem to be convinced. "I still think you're making the biggest mistake of your life..."

"What if I bring him here once?" the blackhaired man suggested eagerly. "I mean to meet you. Then you would see he's honest."

"No!" Shinya shook his head, his eyes widening in shock. "Don't show him where you live, that wouldn't be wise. And do you honestly think he would even come?"

"But don't YOU honestly think that he could easily find out where I live if he wanted to?" Toshiya asked him defiantly and then shrugged his shoulders. "Why shouldn't he? I believe he would if I dared to ask him."

"Is there anything I can do or say to convince you that this isn't a good idea?" Shinya looked sad, gazing his friend in the eye. "I love you Tosh, I don't want to see you get hurt. And I have a bad feeling about all of this."

"Don't worry Shin," the other man smiled again and gushingly hugged his friend. "I promise I will remain careful, okay. But you have to acknowledge that I've been right. He didn't harm me and I really honestly want to be with him."

"I still say you trust him too much." Shinya hugged the other man back tight, as if the embrace would keep his friend with him and away from doing anything stupid. "Just take care of yourself."

"I promise." Toshiya nodded firmly to emphasize his sincerity about the matter. After all, he didn't want to get killed and knew how dangerous it was to walk amongst vampires. "You know, maybe he will see that this life is no good. I mean killing humans randomly. And maybe I can convince him that he can live in harmony with us."

"Tosh..." Shinya pulled back from the embrace, giving his friend a warning glance. "Don't start with that. Don't create any false hopes for yourself. He's a bloodthirsty beast and he's not going to change. Besides, don't they need blood no matter if they want it or not?"

"They do," the other man nodded contemplatively. "But they don't necessarily have to kill the victim." After a few seconds, he added uncertain. "I think."

"Could you please just calm down a bit and think about this seriously? I know you're not a fool, but you're beginning to act like one." The blonde man asked frustratedly.

They've been talking all night, both remaining firm in their points of view. It wasn't that Toshiya didn't know that he endangered himself, it was only that he refused to acknowledge the possibility that the threat could come from Die and not only from the others of his kind. Still, he managed to calm down his friend remotely by promising not to go anywhere without sending Shinya a text message.

He even promised not to go completely unarmed and had gotten a small sharp dagger to decapitate a possible attacker if necessary. Other than that, he had no idea what would kill a vampire. After seeing crosses at the wall inside one of the rooms in the house where Die and Kaoru had their hideout, he doubted their powers and had never even considered that garlic would have an effect on them.

Shinya was still restless, worried about his friend and not willing to accept this new weird fascination of his. If it had been anything else he would've supported his friend, but this was playing with one's life and he didn't feel like allowing that to happen. Several times, he had played with the thought to actually follow his friend one day, but had never had the guts this far.

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you saying you aren't cheap then? XD

I'm in too! *raises hand* People need to fight for them!

I guess I'll be going to bed soon... *sigh* Nothing happening on lj and I'm totally bored. And don't wanna study anymore...

[identity profile] seinen-no.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, maybe a tiny bit cheap^^

Aw *big big hugs* You're too easily bored hun! Sleep well and have sweet sweet dreams!

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
heh, that's what I thought too XD And in a good way only, of course ;)

*big hugs back* I know! It's just that I don't even wanna start anything that would take longer since I know I should sleep soon x) Maybe I'll read some logs or sth before going to bed...

And I miss you x)

[identity profile] sanghamyers.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Can't tell now, I hope it arrives tomorrow. ^^

Really? O_O And here I was thinking I was annoying others with my will to fight for the DxK love.

It's clever-cookies. *supports you*

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty curious now, but I bet she'll tell when it arrived XD

Nah :D It's always good to see people who are willing to fight for their beliefs! Especially if it's Die and Kaoru they believe in ;)

*eats even more cookies* Yay! This'll make sure that I will pass the exam! *happy*

[identity profile] sanghamyers.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Beliefs? You kidding?! I fight for the truth!! <3 *gets all dizzy devil*

I wish I could truly bake. XD

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just trying to put it so that the non-believers wouldn't kill me painfully XD But YES! Now that you said it I will be brave and say it aloud too! It's the truth! Die and Kaoru forever!

It's the thought that counts XD

[identity profile] sanghamyers.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Formerly I tolerated all the other weird beliefs but (sadly) I'm not able to anymore. Sometimes I feel bad for that but then, they should all submit to the truth and I don't fucking care. *lol* Die and Kaoru forever! The truth can't be denied! *walks around protesting* I demand freedom for Kaoru's pants! All rights to Die! =D

*nuts*

True. And my cookies have the DxK essence.

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I'm getting more and more intolerant with time, so maybe it's a natural development in this case? XD People should all open their eyes and see how Die and Kaoru are so totally the best match ever! *joins you protesting*
Now we only need to convince them to go public with their relationship too 8D

That's everything a good cookie needs!

[identity profile] sanghamyers.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah I'll try that the next time one of them crosses my path! Then I'll be just as stubborn as I am right now. I won't move aside until at least one of them admits his true feelings for the other! Yay. Good plan.^^ Join me? XD

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be there right beside you! And they won't stand a chance against us XD

[identity profile] sanghamyers.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
They won't need to. Our charm will give them self-confidence and the courage! They'll confess in tears, I bet! =D

If not, there's still butt-bashing. ^_^

[identity profile] fonulyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I love your logic, honestly! XD That'll be just awesome. And now I'll have sweet dreams of their confessions when I go to bed ;) I need sleep before the exam, so good night ♥

[identity profile] sanghamyers.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. XD Good night & sleep tight! Plus good luck with the exam!
