The walk of life
Chapter 5: High and low
It was on a cold December evening, shortly before Christmas, when Kaoru returned to their cell just in time before the doors were closed. He had told Die that he just wanted to fetch a book from the library quickly and ignored his questioning glance generously. They were talking a bit before the lights went out, nothing unusual. But after the darkness covered them, Kaoru got up from his bunk and back down on the ground.
He rummaged through his tiny locker and finally broke out a small chocolate cake with a single candle which he lit. "Happy birthday Die." He was practically beaming and nodded towards the table. "Sit down."
Die blinked, trying to get the small tears away from the corner of his eyes. He was just all too happy, as he hadn't expected anything, nor would he ever have thought that the other would remember or do anything about it. "I don't know what to say." He smiled thankfully, sitting down on the chair.
"Just wait a second." Kaoru had never been this bouncy before and now broke out something else from his locker. It was half a bottle of vodka and two packages of cigarettes. He knew it was dangerous to have liquor around, but didn't care. It was Die's special day and they should celebrate it, prison or not. He flopped down on the other chair and pushed the items towards the redhead. "Happy birthday again."
"Thank you, so much." Die bit his lip, smiling so widely that it almost broke his face. He touched the items, almost fearing that they would just turn to smoke somehow. "Can I hug you?" He didn't care if it sounded wimpy or girly or anything, he just felt like he wanted to show his gratitude, even if it was a lame way like a hug.
"You can." The other grinned, jumped at his feet and opened his arms, closing Die into a warm embrace. "May the next year be better than the last," he whispered into his ear, meaning every word.
"It will." The redhead nodded, hugging the other tightly. "Thank you." He didn't remember when he had last been honestly happy, instead of being only numb and trying to force the unpleasant feelings away.
"And now we better erase all evidences that we ever had any liquor," Kaoru said winking.
And that was what they did. Nobody from the outer world could imagine how good the cheap vodka tasted nor how much they enjoyed the evening and each other's company.
The blowjob Kaoru gave Die later that night was especially sweet and gentle and afterwards he whispered, "Have sweet dreams," before he turned around to climb his bunk again.
"Thank you. For everything." Die smiled at the other, speaking silently, softly. He felt like crying again, this time out of utter happiness, and he knew his life there would be a hell lot darker and harder without the other around.
"Welcome." Kaoru smiled before lying down in his bed.
The alcohol had made him more sentimental than he had been before and the mere awareness that he had made Die happy caused the smile to stick to his face even after he had fallen asleep. The pleasant happiness staid in the redhead as well, and he slept like a child, contently and tightly. That was a moment when life definitely seemed good.
Christmas came and went, but didn't change anything in the daily routine. The only thing was that the food was richer and tasted better and that they had two days off from work. Snow covered the yard with a thick cold layer of white and every time Kaoru and Die stepped out there to have a smoke and to talk a bit, they felt almost happy.
Even the wardens and the other prisoners seemed to have left them to be in peace for now. They only hoped it would stay that way, and as days passed it even fed their false hopes of not getting any troubles.
It completely took Kaoru off guard when he was harassed by two inmates on his way to the library. Carelessly, he had told Die that he wouldn't have to accompany him and would just go quickly alone before the cells were locked. As he was pinned against a cold wall now, he more than regretted his decision and only tried to fend the guy off, kicking his legs and wriggling to break free.
It was completely coincidental that Die had remembered something he needed to tell his cellmate, and with nothing else to do he had left to follow him. He forgot completely what it was he had wanted to say when he saw the situation though, and only yanked the guy away from Kaoru without even thinking first.
Kaoru was choking and fell limply to the floor, not able to fight, only wheezing, trying to fill his lungs with air. Seeing that he was incapable to interfere, both guys were attacking Die now with their hits. At first Die was able to hit back, to fight and struggle, but eventually the guys got the upper hand and he only had to shelter his head and try not to get too many hits on his face.
Unnoticed by the others, Kaoru had recovered enough and jumped up, kicking one of the guys in the back. Swinging around, he managed to yank another away from Die too and knowing that they wouldn't stand a chance against them, he just grabbed the redhead's wrist and dragged him away, running down the corridor.
However, their flight was stopped when they almost bumped into two guards. Sadly, one
of them was Yamada who displayed a smug smile when he noticed the bruises on Die's face and the marks on Kaoru's neck. "What happened?" the other warden asked.
"Nothing." Die shook his head instantly, trying to create as innocent face as possible. He was hurting all over, and knew he would have bruises of various sizes and colours. They almost held their breaths, waiting for what the wardens would decide about the situation. But although Kaoru nodded to emphasize the redhead's words, it was quite obvious that neither of the guards believed them.
However, there was nothing they could do at that moment. "Okay. Back into your cell. Lock down is in three minutes." In passing by, Yamada brushed Die's shoulder and winked at him, mouthing the words "I keep an eye on you."
Die almost yanked himself away, not able to be touched by the warden since it just brought things to his mind he had tried to forget. They had to rush to the cell though, and got there just in time before the locking of the doors.
"That was close," Kaoru breathed out and made Die sit down on the chair. He wet a cloth and attended the other's bruises. "Thank you. Without you, I would've been..." He didn't finish the sentence, not wanting to complete his trail of thoughts.
The redhead winced at the touches on the bruises, but managed to smile at the other anyways. "No problem. You shouldn't have left alone in the first place."
"I became careless and let my guard down. Sorry." What Kaoru didn't say, but thought, was the reason for his carelessness. He simply felt too much at ease with the other man's company that he had almost forgotten what kind of people were crowding this place.
"Nah, the main thing is that nothing really serious happened." Die stated honestly.
"Right." After attending the other's wounds, Kaoru softly brushed away a strand that had fallen upon his face, his fingertips hardly touching the skin. When he noticed what he was doing, he quickly withdrew his hand and covered his embarrassment with a wide smile. "Your face will show some nice colours tomorrow."
Although he didn't want to admit it even to himself, Die had enjoyed the soft touch on his forehead. He chuckled at the other's words though, grinning up at him. "It will look definitely cool."
"Definitely. Maybe it'll scare away the others." Kaoru sat down at the edge of Die's bunk, still smiling. Suddenly, he became more serious though. "I hope that was a single incident."
"I hope so too." Die nodded. He thought that it was a miracle they had been able to live so peacefully lately, so something like this was expected in a way.
Lazily, the black-haired man dropped on his cellmate's bed and released a huge sigh. "Man, life in here really changes you. I mean, I always have been cautious with strange people, but in here, I'm becoming paranoid."
"But it's only for protection." The redhead reminded softly. "This is a whole other world in here."
"I know that." Another sigh followed. "Still, I sometimes ask myself how I'm supposed to live outside again."
"It'll work out." Die smiled. "Remember, all the hot chicks you still wanted to get. That's a start. Something to work for." Although he reminded the other of their talk from long ago, it somehow made him a bit sad. And he wouldn't have wanted to remember the whole conversation.
Kaoru kept his eyes locked on the underside of his bed above him and nodded contemplatively. "Ah yeah, the chicks." There wasn't really enthusiasm in his voice though. But then, he tilted his head and grinned. "Remember. Once you're out, the first night is on me. I stick to my promise. Screwing for free." He said those words with a sudden cheerfulness that wasn't quite convincing.
"I remember." The redhead mirrored the grin, trying to sound as carefree as possible. "And I will hold you to that promise, trust me."
"You know. It's a pity. I have enough money on my account and still can't use it in here to buy simple things like cigarettes or chocolate." The lights went out with the usually clicking sound and delivered them to darkness. The inmates in the cell next doors not wasting any time that day before getting to business.
"Yeah, I know. Life sucks." Die fell back on his bed heavily, closing his eyes for a moment.
Kaoru used the opportunity to look at the other man through the grey darkness, to scan his face and let his gaze wander over the familiar features that were now blurred by the bruises that already turned purple and green. Something inside him wanted to believe that they could remain friends in the outer world as well, that they would still see each other even after their release. And the part of him which he ignored was hoping that there would even be some blowjobs then or even more. But that, he denied stubbornly.
Die felt the other's eyes on him, and interpreted it so that he was examining the bruises. "Those will get better." He didn't open his eyes while talking though. "But I think we should get some sleep..."
"You're right." Kaoru sounded a bit disappointed, but obediently got up and stripped to his boxers before climbing into his bunk. "Good night."
"Good night." The redhead slipped under his blanket, trying to get some sleep. He really only wanted to sleep at that moment, since he was aching and wanted it to pass by.
As it seemed, this incident had only been the starter for more. The two had to be on their guard all the time when they weren't locked up safely in the cell. It was as if the other inmates had some kind of bet going on about who would succeed first in catching one of them alone. Everyday, life became harder and harder for Die and Kaoru and it caused them to stick together like glue, to cling to each other for safety.
They managed surprisingly well this far, never leaving the other alone and never letting their guard down. It was stressy though, especially since it felt like the whole world was against them and tried to crush them. One thing Die was happy about though, was that Yamada hadn't harassed him in any ways for some time, only casting dirty glances at him whenever they happened to be in the same room.
The tension was nearly palpable in the air wherever they showed up together. Kaoru was so tense all the time that the slightest movement of another prisoner towards them caused him to flinch or subconsciously quicken his steps.
They had learned to communicate without talking, a short glance, an almost invisible nod or headshake was enough to tell the other how to react. It was during lunch when a guy before Kaoru suddenly turned around. "Watch out where you step." Needless to say that the black-haired man hadn't even touched him.
"Sorry." He thought apologizing was the most clever thing to do without looking straight at the man. From the corner of his eyes, he noticed though that a few other inmates in line turned around as well.
"Do you think you can mess with me? Do you?" The guy raised his voice and Kaoru instinctively took a step backwards to Die.
"Look, he said he's sorry. Let go." Die looked straight at the seemingly angry guy. He didn't know if interfering would be wise or not, but he had to do something, as the situation seemed to go towards an unwanted direction.
The other inmates had almost formed a circle around them, and Die felt his mouth dry and he had to swallow hard. The trick was not to show you were scared, but sometimes it simply was difficult, seeing how many strong guys they had against them.
"Look, look. The watchdog's barking." The guy displayed a malicious grin and took a quick glance at his companions over his shoulder. Then, he slapped the tray off Kaoru's hands. "Looking for trouble?"
Kaoru didn't dare to bend down and pick up his lunch and shook his head. "No. Am not." With having said that, he stepped away from the queue, hoping that he and Die would get away this easily. It had been in vain though for one of the other men grabbed his arm and yanked him back. "Don't you think you should apologize? Some of your spaghettis stained my shoes."
Instinctively Die took a hold of the man who had grabbed Kaoru's arm, yanking him away. "Go clean your shoes then." His voice was shaking almost unnoticeably, and he hoped they could just flee. He tugged his cellmate's arm, signalling that they'd better skip eating today and flee the scenery while they still could.
One of the guards came to see what the noise had been and why the queue had stopped. He saw the tray on the floor and slowly approached the group. "Something wrong? Go on!" He turned to Kaoru who was the only one without a tray in his hands. "And you, pick up the mess!" the warden said and turned his back on them again. Knowing that Die was standing right behind him, Kaoru crouched down and quickly collected the food from the floor.
Nervously Die looked around, ready to react as soon as someone approached them. He hoped that no one would try anything, now that a guard was near. But it seemed they weren't that lucky. A man from the left side stepped closer, and almost subconsciously Die moved to stand between him and Kaoru to protect the other. Before he even noticed it, it earned him a punch in the ribs though, and he reacted by slamming his fist near the other's chin.
Kaoru only saw the happenings from the corner of his eyes and before he could react, somebody kicked him forcefully and sent him to kiss the ground. Although the guard must have heard the noises, he ignored it for the time being, pretending that nothing happened behind him. Kaoru was at his feet just in time to witness Die landing a perfect punch in some other guy's face, cashing one from another guy in return. The inmate who had started
everything, suddenly screamed for the guards without any reason and almost instantly, Kaoru knew that this was just a huge set up to separate him and Die.
Although Die heard the call, he had no time to hold back the last punch, and the guard turned just when his fist slammed in one guy's stomach. He knew he was in serious troubles, as the guards had said they'd keep an eye on him for any violent behaviour. And he instantly knew that it would cause serious troubles for Kaoru as well. But it was too late to change it now.
The situation was hopeless for both of them, as the word of six guys was against two. Kaoru couldn't help but to think that the guards simply didn't want to believe him and Die when they explained that the others had started the fight. It ended up in both of them being cuffed and brought back to their cell to decide what would happen to them afterwards.
