Plotless ficlet it is.

The first time Heechul invites Han Geng over for tea they barely know each other.

They have some common friends and they have met once or twice but it doesn’t really count for anything. Han Geng knows that Heechul has a sharp tongue and that he likes making fun of his friends, but that is about it. He has always kind of avoided the other teen, although he can’t really tell why. It’s not like he’s afraid of Heechul. Being made fun of just never was high on the list of things he likes.

That is exactly what Han Geng expects when Heechul finds him sitting on the ground behind the school building. He’s had the shittiest day in the whole universe, and he knows he looks every bit of it. His fingers are shaking when he brings the cigarette to his lips, taking a long drag while purposefully ignoring Heechul and the pointed look he gains from him.

Unfortunately, Heechul has never been – and never will be – one to let himself be ignored.

“Wow what happened to you?” Heechul asks as he steps closer and plops down to sit next to Han Geng. Or more, places himself delicately next to him and makes sure to sit on Han Geng’s jacket instead of the dirty ground. Under some other circumstances Han Geng might’ve snapped at him but now he just lets it slide. He avoids looking at Heechul altogether, feigning interest in the cloud formations that look threateningly much like rain.

Unfortunately, Heechul has never been – and never will be – one to give up easily.

“You look like you got hit by a train. And that’s putting it kindly.” Comes the next observation and out of the corner of his eye, Han Geng sees long fingers snatch a cigarette from the box beside his knee. He ignores it. As he also ignores the pointy elbow nudging him the next moment. “Got light?”

He doesn’t respond, but it only results in another nudge and finally he lets out a breath he didn’t notice he was holding. “I. I’d just really appreciate if you’d let me angst in peace, okay.” He aims for a casual tone, flexes his jaw and tries to relax. He should’ve known that he’s not that lucky.

“Angst in peace, smoke a pack of these and die of lung cancer all alone?” Heechul asks nonchalantly. “Fine. I’m not going to visit you in the hospital though. I hate watching wasted potential.”

That sparks Han Geng’s curiosity but he bites his lip, doesn’t say anything at all. Before long a sharp elbow collides with his ribs – something he already expected – followed by an insistent tug on his arm – something he never expected. “Come with me. I’ll make you some tea.”

Tea? Han Geng wants to ask if they’re over sixty instead of almost twenty. He never gets the chance before he is pulled up on his feet, his jacket and his bag pushed unceremoniously against his chest. “I’m fine, really,” he tries, suddenly unsure of how to react. Before his mind even catches up with his feet, he is following Heechul towards the dorm buildings.

“Nonsense!” Heechul shrugs. “Tea solves everything!”

Somehow Han Geng finds himself smiling

That is the first time Heechul makes Han Geng tea, but it is certainly not the last.

Han Geng is actually surprised how fast he gets used to going back into Heechul’s room instead of his own, sitting on Heechul’s bed instead of his own, listening to Heechul’s constant nagging instead of the silence he’d have on his own. He is even more surprised when he realizes he kind of looks forward to it.

Even when Han Geng has a book open in front of him, a notebook on his lap and a pen between his teeth, Heechul doesn’t even pretend he’s studying. Heechul is sitting on the floor, clad in an oversized sweater and leggings, his hair tied up in a ponytail. Doing his toenails. Toenails. Han Geng has to do a mental eyeroll at the mere thought of that, especially after catching a glimpse of the colour of the nailpolish.

Heechul is also giving him the latest updates on the campus gossip. He pretends he’s not listening but they both know it’s a lie. “You know, Sungmin still has a crush on Siwon. Or I don’t know if he’s just lusting after the sixpack, I wouldn’t be surprised. I’m just surprised he hasn’t jumped him yet! If he’s waiting for the idiot to notice his advances it’s never going to happen.”

Somehow, during these few weeks, Heechul’s friends have become Han Geng’s friends, and vice versa. Their combined social circles were also forming some very interesting matches, and Heechul loved it. “We should’ve started hanging out much sooner!” He decides after there’s a third possible couple in their vicinity.

Heechul is completely nonplussed even though there is never a real reply from Han Geng to the juicy information he has. He simply jumps from the interesting case of Sungmin drooling after Siwon to the confusing case of Kyuhyun developing actual human feelings. “Kyuhyun has been acting like a love-struck fool!” Heechul exclaims. “He ate lunch with us outside yesterday.” He lowers his voice to nearly a hiss, as if he is sharing the biggest secret in the universe. Even if Han Geng already knew that, really. He was there.

“And?” Han Geng knows he shouldn’t interfere but he can’t really stop himself before he arches an eyebrow and looks up at Heechul. “He always eats lunch with us.” At least during the past weeks he had, Han Geng doesn’t really know how the group dynamics had been before he had gotten mixed into it.

“Yes!” Heechul seems delighted. “But didn’t you notice he wasn’t glued to his handheld console! He barely took it out of his bag! He was too busy trying to steal the onions from Seasoning’s plate.” He looks at Han Geng like that is another big revelation, like it should mean something.

Han Geng just stares.

Heechul sighs, exasperated. The next thing Han Geng knows is that he is getting a half an hour lecture. The topics vary, but he is fairly sure the main points of it are a) Zhou Mi hates onions, b) Kyuhyun is trying to show his undying love through stealing said onions, c) Heechul thinks it’s both utterly adorable and plain sickening, and d) Han Geng is stupid for not noticing important things.

Over time, their tea evenings become a ritual. Something as important as brushing your teeth. Something you don’t even really notice, it just happens automatically. Until one day, you realize something is missing and you have to stop and think about it.

That is exactly how Han Geng feels when Heechul is sick and stays off campus. Heechul is not an easy person when he’s sick, and thus everyone just sends him get well messages while keeping as far away from him as possible. Zhou Mi and Donghae are the only ones who dare to go in, and that is partly because Zhou Mi actually shares the two rooms and one kitchen with Heechul and Donghae, Donghae is special.

The two make sure Heechul isn’t dying, despite the incredible quantity of complaining, get him something to eat and bring him new DVDs to watch. That is how it’s always been, Donghae informs Han Geng cheerfully, Heechul only needs to be handled the right way.

Somehow that sticks to Han Geng’s mind like a golden piece of advice when he heads over to Heechul’s room the fifth day into the sickness. Zhou Mi is surprised about the sudden company but he doesn’t complain, only smiles and marches in to take the first wave of complaints while Han Geng heats the soup. A moment later he emerges back to the kitchen, patting Han Geng’s shoulder. “All yours!”

Han Geng isn’t certain if he likes how chipper that sounds. Nevertheless, Zhou Mi is already out of the door, so he steels himself and brings Heechul his soup. If Heechul is surprised, he doesn’t show it. He might be a little silent for the first few minutes, but then the bitching starts and Han Geng takes it as a sign that the other teen isn’t dying, after all.

Han Geng stays the whole day. In the evening he warms them both some tea. Over the rim of the cup, Heechul smiles.

Heechul swears he only got better because of secret Chinese medicine, otherwise the illness would’ve been fatal. Zhou Mi and Han Geng share a smile as they keep silent, knowing there was nothing else but soup and good company they offered. And tea, of course tea.

It doesn’t take long and everything is back to normal, including Heechul’s horrible taste in nailpolish and the evenings they spend together, just the two of them. The only difference is that by now, Han Geng doesn’t even try to pretend he’s studying. Instead he is lounging on the bed, a pillow propped under his chin as he listens to Heechul go on and on about the relationships within their group of friends.

Alright, something else is different, too. These days it’s not just a monologue, but Han Geng actually participates by adding his own commentary. Heechul seems immensely pleased.

Especially when he can share some new information. He is practically vibrating with excitement, even if he tries to appear cool and casual. “Kyuhyun still thinks hiding a dead spider in Seasoning’s lunch box qualifies as hitting on him.” He doesn’t even look up from his work, carefully painting another toenail. There is a small grin dancing on his lips, though.

Han Geng almost flinches. “He did what?” Usually he would’ve been there to have lunch with the others, but not today. Of course it is just his luck to miss the most eventful day of the year. Or well… maybe that is a slight exaggeration.

“Well, he tried to make everyone believe it was alive and that he saved Seasoning. But we all know the spider was already dead when it got in there. All but Seasoning. He thinks Kyuhyun is a hero, now.” Heechul explains, openly amused by now.

Han Geng chuckles, he can imagine the admiring glow in Zhou Mi’s eyes all too well. As well as the smug look Kyuhyun gets whenever that is directed at him. “It is kind of cute.”

“If by cute you mean awkward then yes.” Heechul agrees, before smoothly switching the topic.

Han Geng knows Heechul is going on and on about Sungmin now, and how he is still trying to hit on the clueless Siwon. All Han Geng can think about is how the morning light reflects on Heechul’s hair and how his eyes light up when he gets to a particularly juicy bit of gossip. He doesn’t even try to pretend he’s not staring.

Heechul would notice it anyway.

It has been silent for a while, before Han Geng speaks up. “Heechul?” His voice is soft and still he almost feels like it breaks the moment. Almost.

“Yes?” Heechul looks up from the magazine he’s been flipping through and his face is close, so very close. It makes Han Geng swallow hard and he hopes it’s not too obvious.

“I just wanted to tell you that I. Well. Yeah, uhm.” There is an awkward pause. “I’ll get more tea. Want some?”

Han Geng is mildly disappointed in himself. That wasn’t exactly the confession he had aimed for.

But Heechul smiles, knowingly, and somehow that makes everything alright. “Yes. Please.”
