Even with your Lego
He had promised it and still he wasn't there. Die released a deep, disappointed sigh as he took the last sip from his water. The passing by waitress threw a compassionate glance at him and arched an eyebrow questioningly, silently asking if she should NOW bring the menu. The redhead shook his head though and returned to what he had done the past three quarters of an hour before: staring into nothingness.
Slowly, he began to think that Kaoru wasn't in this as much as he; that he simply didn't care anymore. Or was there somebody else? Now that Die came to think of it, it did make sense. The discussion hey had had over Kaoru not wanting to move in together with him; not even when Die had signaled he would be willing to give up his own apartment and move into Kaoru's. He knew how much the smaller man despised changes. They made him feel insecure, like he lost control and there was nothing Kaoru hated more than feeling like things were slipping through his hands. But was that enough of an explanation for the forceful way he had reacted to the suggestion of sharing one apartment?
Die knew the older guitarist's problems with changes, but he was sure Kaoru had no idea how much he had figured him out. Kaoru simply was afraid of too much commitment, didn't like the idea that Die's belongings and his own mixing until it wasn't sure anymore which belonged to whom. Another thing that would make him feel like losing control over his life and that scared him although Kaoru would never admit it of course.
So they had agreed, or Die had been forced to agree more or less, to keep things as they were. Two separate apartments, two whole lives and two people trying to base a relationship on this. Was that even possible? Another sigh left the redheaded man and when the door of the small restaurant flung open, his head snapped up, an expectant expression on his face. Again it was just some random customer, some hungry man trying to escape the storm and the snow and fill his stomach with something warm; just like all the times before.
Slowly, Die got angry; angry and frustrated. Maybe his lover really had somebody else. Maybe there was another man in his life. Was that the reason why Kaoru only had such little time for him lately, why he seemed to be more busy than usual? Could it be that he had been fooled by the older guitarist; that he had been blind to the facts and in reality, their relationship was withering away?
Die was brooding, dwelling in his dark thoughts and didn't even notice when the door opened again. Maybe he should make a clean cut and tell Kaoru it would be over if certain things wouldn't change? That would be a great Christmas present, he thought sarcastically. A fresh start.
Something caught his attention though and he raised his gaze only to see his lover enter the small diner. The sight alone was enough to make him dismiss any thought about kicking it. The older guitarist's cheeks were flushed, his hair slightly disheveled by the wind outside, wet from the snow and his lips parted as he was breathing heavily. Obviously, he had been hurrying. The most dominant expression on Kaoru’s face was happiness though. He indeed looked happy and content.
Still, Die didn't say anything, only waited for him to reach the table and give an explanation for his delay.
Either, Kaoru really didn't see his lover's glare or he generously ignored it when he sat down on the chair opposite to the redhead and smiled at him with a smile that seemed to perfect the sun. "Hi!" Before Die could reply anything, Kaoru raised his arm to stop him. "I know I'm late and I'm sorry." The expression on his face along with the tone of his voice made clear that he really meant it. "But there was something I had to do. I wanted to get this!"
With having said that, the older guitarist shoved a small box across the table towards his lover. Die's eyes widened. What was this? Some kind of weird dream where Kaoru would now kneel down in front of him and propose? He gave his lover a questioning glance, arching an eyebrow. "Just open it."
Inside, there was a small silver key and Die instantly knew what this key would open; the door to the older guitarist's apartment. "But -?" he began only to be cut off by Kaoru again. "I know, you already have one, but read the card!"
'The owner of this key is permitted to move his belongings into the apartment it opens.' There was something else in the box, a small sign, 'Andou/Niikura', a name plate for the door.
Die was literally speechless and he looked at the other man questioningly, his mouth opening and closing as if he wanted to say something. "I used all the free time I had in the past weeks to get rid of some of my stuff and make room for yours. I even painted the walls in the bedroom since you said you hate the colour," explained Kaoru. "Everything's ready for you to move in."
"Even with all my Lego?" Die asked, knowing that Kaoru thought it was way too childish to still collect Lego at their age and hated the idea of the small figurines and vehicles to litter the shelves in his apartment. He used to call them 'dust-catcher'..
The answer was a grin and a nod. "Yeah, even with your Lego."
