Heaven Sent
Chapter 5

Together, they went back into the living-room, cuddling close on the couch to watch some TV. Kaoru was sitting between the redhead's legs, his back leaning against the other's chest. Like that, he felt perfectly warm and comfortable. They had developed that more or less into a habit, watching TV in the evenings together. It wasn't about what they were watching, but the closeness they shared was what mattered

After some time, Kaoru wriggled out of the embrace and stood up. "I'm back in a second." He announced winking and disappeared into the direction of the bathroom. Die followed him with his eyes and didn't notice that somebody appeared behind him until a soft rustling gave away that he wasn't alone. It made the redhead tense for a moment, since he instantly knew what it was. He closed his eyes, not making a move to get up though. "What do you want?"

"You have to come with me." And with a soft touch on his upper arm, Die was dragged away as if the earth had opened underneath him and swallowed him. Only that his trip went upwards instead of down, not bothering for walls and roofs, shooting straight to the sky.

The redhead was used to it though, and didn't bother too much, only turned to face the other as soon as he felt they had stopped. "And now will you tell me what the matter is?" He couldn't hide the annoyance in his voice completely. But he had a good guess what was going on.

"The boss is angry. You seem to get nowhere with your mission and you even got the human into prison." The other angel, considerably older than Die with raven black hair and eyes, glared at him. "You weren't supposed to get this assignment anyways. But now that the human trusts you, we can't change that anymore."

"The prison incident wasn't anything serious." Die rolled his eyes, still sounding somewhat annoyed. "No harm done, he just had to spend one night there. And what does it matter to you who got the job eventually?"

"I don't care about that. It's the boss who does." The other angel grabbed the collar of the redhead’s shirt and pulled him closer. "You shouldn't interfere too much and just get the job done. Then Kaoru can get back to his life or to the other. Just do as you're supposed to or the boss will become really angry. He was already less than pleased about the fact that you're screwing each other's brains out. You know he doesn't like that kind of interaction and only tolerates it if it's not harming the mission."

"I know." The defiance was slowly fading from the redhead, as the other angel was considerably older and higher in rank than he was. "But I will get the work done. I just wanted him to trust me completely." He knew it was a lame excuse, and not even true. He had wanted the human's love and to be a part of his life, nothing more and nothing less.

"Die..." Suddenly, the other angel's voice became softer and he let go of the redhead, instead wrapping his arm around his shoulder. "You know we're not supposed to feel anything towards our missions. We're only there to fix things that went wrong. He'll forget you afterwards, you know that."

"I know that too." Die sighed and averted his gaze to the ground, shifting his feet nervously. He knew it was bound to happen, and the thought already made him almost cry. He let out another melancholy sigh and looked up into the other angel's eyes. "But at least I will remember him."

"Yes, but the memory will lose its importance the more missions you get." The other angel seemed to pity him and took on a serious expression. "But Die, there's nothing you can do against it. So if I send you back down now, it's the day after tomorrow for Kaoru and he will be asking you where you have gone. Just tell him it was about the mission and finally lead him to the right path."

"Okay." The redhead bit his lip, nodding to show he had understood. "But with one thing you're wrong; I won't forget him. I can't. He's special."

"I see." The older angel was a lot more experienced than Die and he knew that it wouldn't make sense to argue about this fact. Still, he was sure to be right in the end, but didn't want to destroy the other's hopes. "Now go and enjoy the time you'll have together with him." Something in the redhead's eyes made him believe that he was serious about his feelings towards the human, that he indeed had fallen in love and it endangered the mission and everything they were working for.

The younger angel only nodded, trying to smile at the other although it only came out as a forced small grin. He knew there was no other choice than to obey and inwardly decided he would now try to go on with the mission.

Kaoru had had a tough time after Die's disappearance. He was terribly afraid that the angel would be gone forever and even skipped work, just waiting at home and hoping he would return. Now, he was lying on his bed in the darkness, covertly smelling the sheets on the other's side and imagining he was still there. Was his mission completed? Could it be that he was gone forever? He didn't want to think of it and just kept on inhaling the familiar scent which was lingering on the sheets and cushions.

"Hi." A soft voice sounded from the side of the bed, as the redheaded angel was sitting there near to the human, reaching his hand to touch his shoulder.

Within a second, Kaoru sat up and launched himself into his arms. "I thought you left me. Don't you ever scare me like that! What happened?"

"I got admonished a bit." Die smiled and hugged the other tightly against himself. "I'm sorry to have scared you."

"It's okay. As long as you're back now. Why did they admonish you?" Kaoru tried to calm down and carefully detached from the other again, looking straight at him through the darkness.

"Well, I've been neglecting my mission a tiny bit..." The angel confessed, averting his gaze to his hands.

"Does that mean..." But the black-haired man didn't want to end his thought and just shook his head. "So you'll leave me?"

"Not yet at least." Die tried to smile soothingly at the other, thinking of the way to tell this. "But it means I have to work harder on it though."

Gently, Kaoru wrapped his arms around the angel's waist, pulled him close and dropped backwards until they were lying sprawled in the middle of the mattress, the other on top of him. "What does that mean for me? For us? How long do we have?"

"It's impossible to tell." The redhead shrugged, as he didn't really know much himself. "But we need to travel a bit. And I need to show you some things."

"Right now?" The human asked quietly. He knew that there probably wasn't anything they could do to prevent Die from leaving once, but he was determined to enjoy the time they had to the fullest. And maybe, only maybe, they would find a way to stay together once.

"Well, not at this instant. I dunno what time it is..." Die looked a bit puzzled. "But soon. Maybe tomorrow morning."

"Twenty past midnight," came the instant answer and Kaoru pulled him closer still, resting his hands on his lover's butt. "Good. So then we have some time till we need to get going." He was just relieved that the other had returned, that he could smell and taste him again, feel his warmth so near.

"Listen Kao, it's not like I'll be gone in a minute anyways. You'll know it beforehand." The redhead looked the other in the eye, bringing his hand to cup his cheek.

"I'm just afraid to lose you." The Kaoru admitted quietly and averted his gaze. Thanks to the darkness, the angel couldn't see the blush on his cheeks, but he couldn't change how he felt.

Die leaned in to place a soft kiss on the human's lips. "You'll live through it. I promise." His voice had a loving tone, but he couldn't prevent a lump from rising in this throat.

Speechless, Kaoru simply wrapped his arms tightly around the angel's waist and buried his face in the crook of his shoulder. He wasn't all too sure if Die was right with his words and he just didn't want to think about saying good-bye. He just wanted to be close to the other this night. Silently the redhead held him, knowing it was hard on him too. But he wouldn't remember any of their time together afterwards, and somehow Die thought it was maybe good. Since then it would be easier for Kaoru to get over the loss.

They spent the whole night clinging to each other, just listening to the other's breath. Kaoru had to admit that it frightened him that he didn't know what the future would bring for them. Die had never talked about his mission, never even dropped a hint and now it became so important all of a sudden and would change everything again.

They didn't sleep much, but still were oddly awake in the morning when they needed to get up. The redhead told that they would take the train, since the first place they were going to go see was somewhere a bit further away.

Kaoru followed him obediently and didn't ask many questions. He didn't talk a lot anyways, too nervous and somehow curious about what lay ahead of him. Everything was somehow odd and for some reason, he thought that they were moving in another dimension, that his everyday life didn't matter nor affected him at that moment.

When they were sitting in the train, Die thought he could as well explain him what his mission exactly was, since he deserved to know it. "You weren't supposed to get stuck in a job like that." He begun silently, looking down at his hands.

"I know." The other nodded and forced a smile on his lips. "You told me more than once."

"You were destined to become a rockstar." The angel went on, not knowing how to choose his words properly. But he tried to be clear and honest.

"You're kidding me. A rockstar?" Kaoru couldn't believe it, but there was something in the redhead's eyes that gave away his seriousness. "You really mean it? A rockstar? How come I ain't one then?"

"You took a wrong decision once," Die shrugged sighing and looked at the other honestly. "Or a series of those. You were pretty good with guitar, weren't you?"

"I was, but then I thought I'd never make a living with that." The other explained casually. "I mean, there are a lot good guitarists out there and I just didn't want to end up on the streets with nothing once."

"You never played anything for me." The redhead smiled, trying to lighten up the mood a tiny bit, although he wasn't that successful.

"I think I would be rusty. My guitar's been on the attic for a long time." Kaoru smiled a bit apologetically. "But if you want, I can of course play something to you." They were forced to remain quiet for a moment since somebody sat down on the seat next to Kaoru, but after some time, he got up again and left the train. "I really had the opportunity to become a rockstar?"

"Yeah. You just didn't have enough determination, I guess. Or you were too scared." Die leaned a bit closer to the other man, entwining their fingers.

"I have no idea. I think I was scared. And then, I once tried to find members for a band, but they were all just losers." The angel's proximity instantly calmed Kaoru down and he gently squeezed his hand, leaning a bit more against him.

"Maybe you didn't search long enough?" The angel had to guess though, because he only knew how things were and how they should be, nothing in between.

"Maybe." Kaoru nodded and turned his head a bit to face the other. "And then, my parents kept on telling me I should stop living on dreams and such. I don't get along with them anyways, but back then, they only confused me until I just dropped the wish to become a professional guitarist."

"Would you turn back time and do it all differently now if you could?" Die asked bluntly. That was basically his mission. To make the other agree on starting all over again.

"I don't think so." The black-haired man shook his head slowly. "I mean, I know what I have now in life and I don't know what would await me. I think I'm quite content." With a smile, he added. "Now that I have you."

The last words made Die smile, as he just loved it that he was important to the other man. But he knew that it endangered the whole mission, and understood why the other angel had come to admonish him. "But you could be a star. It was meant for you..."

"But how could it have been meant for me if I'm here now? I do believe in something like fate, but it's supposed to lead us somehow and thus, it made me take the decision not to become a rockstar." Kaoru shook his head stubbornly, not willing to believe that something else had been meant for him.

The redhead sighed, knowing the other well enough to understand it would be useless to argue about it. So he didn't say anything about the topic for the time being.

There was a slight tension between them since they were both insecure about the situation. Kaoru was a bit angry even, for it seemed as if Die wanted to get rid of him, wanted to urge the decision on him and the angel felt bad, because there was nothing he could do about it. It was probably the hardest thing for Die now when it came to his mission, since he would have to convince the other to let go of him and go back, although he wanted the complete opposite himself.

"Where are you taking me?" Kaoru asked after some time to break the silence. He didn't want to be angry and had to admit that curiosity was slowly winning over. What did their destination have to do with him being destined to be a rockstar?

"You'll see then." The redhead smiled slightly. They were almost there already, and he didn't explain anything further before they stepped out of the train. The angel grabbed the other's hand, looking him seriously in the eye. "I will take you to see someone. But that someone won't be able to see you, okay?"

"O-okay." A bit puzzled, Kaoru nodded and followed Die. They were entering a small super-market which was full due to the rush-hour.

Holding the other's hand tight Die dragged them further into the shop, looking around as he was searching for something. They had to walk through crowds of people, and finally slowed down. "There." He nodded towards a thin man a bit further away from them, signalling Kaoru to take a look.

"I see him." Kaoru nodded and scanned the other man's appearance thoroughly. What on earth did that poor guy have to do with him? He noticed the stressed expression on the other's face while he was filling the customers' shopping bags. "So, he is a bit too old to have such a shitty job," the black-haired man stated finally and looked at Die for some kind of explanation. He was still holding his hand all along though, not wanting to be left alone.

"We'll wait until his shift is over and then follow him a while." The redhead turned to give the other man a small smile. "But first about him..." Together they walked to the side, leaning against the wall while the angel kept on explaining about that man they had come to see. He was a bit younger than Kaoru, stressed out almost to the breaking point, and apparently this wasn't even everything yet.

A nagging feeling inside Kaoru told him that he was somehow responsible for the other man's miserable situation. Yet, he didn't want to admit it and thought that this wasn't his business. How on earth could he change the other's life? But the way how Die spoke made clear that this other man had something to do with this 'rockstar'-story he had told before.

They were waiting more or less patiently until Terachi Shinya's shift was over. Kaoru had noticed his name on a small sign pinned to the other's jacket. They followed him to the train that brought them into a poor district of the town, skyscrapers rising into the sky everywhere. As the man entered what apparently was his home, Die just simply stepped in too, pulling Kaoru with him. They were instantly greeted with a chaos. Around half a dozen kids running around in the house, seemingly in no kind of order. One child practically ran through Die, but the angel only gasped silently at the feeling as he was taken by surprise.

"Oh god, are those all his? I thought he's younger than me." Kaoru couldn't believe it. After one of the children had run through him as well and he had shivered forcefully at the unpleasant feeling, he was constantly busy to dodge them. Shinya instead made his way through the chaos with a blank expression and entered the small living-room where a woman sat on an old armchair. "You're late." She instantly began to grumble.

"I'm sorry. Had to do overtime." The man answered monotonously, not even smiling at the woman who apparently was his wife. He went to the couch and sat down with a barely audible sigh. Die held Kaoru's hand tight, and pulled him to the side where it wasn't that likely that the kids would run through them.

The whole atmosphere was so cold and unfriendly that shivers where running down Kaoru's spine and gooseflesh appeared on his skin. When the woman spotted one of the children, she jumped up and senselessly yelled at it which caused him to flinch. "Okay, he indeed has a sucky life. Can we leave now?" The black-haired man turned his gaze to meet his lover's eyes, looking pleadingly. "I don't like it here."

"Okay, I guess you've seen enough." Die took a glance at the poor man on the couch, whose eyes were somehow empty, and his whole appearance lifeless. He tugged Kaoru's hand softly, bringing them out of the house. Once outside they still heard the woman yelling and at least one of the children was screaming.

"Why doesn't he just leave her? She seems to be a bitch." Kaoru couldn't believe that the poor guy just allowed that woman to suck the life out of him. Squeezing his lover's hand tightly, he asked. "So he is destined to be a rockstar too?" Die hadn't said anything like that so far, but he somehow guessed it.

"He used to be a talented drummer." The redhead walked slowly forward, looking into the distance. "Until he got debts, and got married when his father told him to." Suddenly he stopped, turning to look Kaoru in the eye. "And he was supposed to be the drummer of your band."

"Are you telling me it's my fault that this guy leads such a miserable life?" Kaoru didn't want to be blamed for that and furthermore couldn't believe that the angel was implying it. But then, he trusted Die and when he said it was like that, then he would believe it. Still, it didn't make him want to change his own life. Everybody was responsible for their own actions and he had never harmed anybody on purpose.

"No, not exactly. But let's say that this guy lacks the determination to chase his dreams alone, and life was hard on him." Die shrugged. "He made some bad choices too, and it wasn't necessary for him to end up like this despite you not being there. But you could've helped him, only by going after your own dreams."

"So I AM responsible for his situation." Kaoru had to think about things and fell silent. He was glad that Die was there, but things had changed between them and he had noticed it only then. The happy sparkle in the angel's eyes was gone as were his ambiguous comments and his bounciness.

Suddenly, the human pulled him closer and wrapped his arms around him. "I'm sorry. I know it's your mission, but I just can't change who I am." Almost carefully, he planted a soft kiss on Die's full lips. "But if I get to choose between being a rockstar and saving that poor guy's life and being together with you, I take the latter."

Die smiled slightly, hugged the other tight against himself and kissed him softly. "I'm sorry. I never wanted this to get between us." He sighed, shaking his head to get rid of the melancholy. "But I need to show you these things. I have no other choice."

"That's okay." The smile on Kaoru's lips was honest. "And I know I'm a tough nut. But I just don't want to give in so easily. Before I met you, I didn't even know I was really missing something in my life."

"No one will force you to anything." The redhead was honest, since it really was the other's free will that counted. "I'm just happy you want to be with me. But still, promise me to think about it." It took him a lot to even ask that, because he would've just wanted to say that they could forget about these people and go on living together.

"I promise." Kaoru nodded seriously. "So there's more people whose life I destroyed by being indecisive?" He said those words with a grin, but there was some insecurity hidden in the depth of his eyes. He was serious about his promise though and would take every aspect into his consideration.

"Don't say it like that." Die caressed the other's cheek with his thumb. "They could've done something for themselves even though you decided this way." He sighed. "But yes, there are more people who were affected by your decisions."

Sighing, the other man nodded and closed his eyes, leaning slightly into the touch. "Okay, but we don't visit the next today, do we? I'm exhausted and hungry and I want a long hot shower." He knew that he was whining, but he didn't feel like holding back. It was a bit as if he was uncle Scrooge and Die was the ghost of the past, present and future. Somehow like a bad dream.

"We don't need to see the next today, not even tomorrow necessarily. As long as we don't push it too long." The angel kept the other enclosed into a warm embrace, smiling a bit as he truly loved being this close to him. "Let's go home and relax together."

"Yes please." Suddenly, Kaoru chuckled. "Now it would be great if you had your wings and we wouldn't have to suffer a long train-ride."

"What do you mean 'if' I had them?" Die pouted slightly, trying to look hurt. "Do you think I just cut them off and leave them into a wardrobe when I go somewhere?"

"But why don't I see them?" Grinning, the human shoved both of his hands under the angel's shirt and ran his palms over his back. "There's nothing there." His voice had become a bit lower, his eyes sparkling. "Nothing but wonderful smooth skin."

"Wanna fly then?" The redhead couldn't help but to smile lovingly, bringing both of his hands up to hold the other's head between his palms.

"If you trust that you can carry my weight." Kaoru smiled up at his lover and let his hands roam down his back. "But only if you want to." He made sure once more.

Die was still smiling, and brought his lips close to the other's, almost touching them as he whispered. "Close your eyes."

Obediently, Kaoru did as he was told, a shudder running through him at the other's words. Somehow, he was waiting for a kiss and even raised his chin a bit more towards his lover, not thinking about how ridiculous he must have looked for random passers-by.

He got a kiss, only a chaste one though, as Die closed his eyes and concentrated. It wasn't that hard for him to take out his wings, but he somehow felt more comfortable if no one was watching. When they broke through his skin and through the shirt, Kaoru opened his eyes again though, looking startled at the huge white wings that had appeared in the redhead's back. "They are gorgeous," he breathed out, completely stunned. They were flapping a bit, unfolding the feathers which hadn't been used in a long time.

Die had to admit that he did like them somewhat as well, because the feathers were soft and shimmered pearly white in the fading light. And to see the admiration in the other man's eyes made him like his wings more than he ever had. "And huge." He chuckled with a wide smile.

"But gorgeous." Kaoru whispered again and he felt like kneeling down and praying for the first time in his life. He had believed Die to be an angel, a creature of God, but seeing him like this had something holy, made him appear pristine and untouchable. "They suit you," he stated a bit more secure after a few seconds and winked. "Better than black leather ones."

"Thank you." The redhead smiled brightly, leaning forward to peck his lover's lips softly. "I just think I need a short moment before they're ready to go."

"Want to try alone first? I mean, I wouldn't want you to drop me." Instinctively, Kaoru took a few steps backwards to look at the angel's full size before him.

"If it makes you feel better." Die was sure he wouldn't drop the other, but still took a step backwards and winked at him. "Just watch in awe." The words had barely left his lips as he already took off.

The black-haired man followed him with wide eyes and an open mouth. From afar, the wings were shining even more, standing in crass contrast to the angel's flaming red hair. When he was sure that Die was looking at him, he stuck out his thumb as if to hitch a ride, chuckling merrily.

The angel drew a small circle in the air above the other, before coming straight to him, wrapping his arms around him tight as soon as his feet had touched the ground. "Hold on to me." He made sure he had a good hold of the other man before heading upwards again.

Kaoru's heart was pounding quickly, an enticing mixture of excitement and fear running through his veins. He held onto the angel with all his might, but Die was strong enough for both of them and it wouldn't have been necessary. Only after a few moments, Kaoru opened his eyes, first looking straight at the other and then tilting his head to see how high they were. "Gods, don't you dare to drop me." Seeing that the houses had become small dots on the ground, the cars having the size of ants, he instinctively tightened his hold on his angel.

"Don't worry." Came the carefree reply with a stunning smile. "I still need you. Alive preferably." Die chuckled, playfully making a large loop in the air.

"Holy!!!" Like in a roller-coaster, the movement made Kaoru laugh frantically without him being able to control it. The air was cold so far above the ground, but he didn't feel it, his body pressed tightly against the angel's which was heating him. "Too bad I can't ride on your back like on a dragon," he teased, "with you wearing a snaffle."

"I'd kill you for even trying that." Die laughed, this time heading into the general direction of the apartment they shared. It had been long when he had last enjoyed flying this much, and he knew that it was all thanks to the other man who was there with him.

"But you said you need me alive." The human grinned and turned his head as far as possible to see where they were heading, trying to spot something familiar down below.

Die noticed the attempt, and it made him chuckle. "That's no use. We're still far away." He just loved the happy sparkle in the human's eyes, the smile that was dancing on his lips as he was obviously enjoying himself.

"How do you know where you are? Do you have some kind of sonar like a bat or what?" Kaoru chuckled and turned back to look at the redhead. "Or do you just know it?"

"I just kinda know it. Plus I can see further than you." The redhead explained instantly. He just instinctively knew where he was, and acted on it.

"That's majorly cool." Kaoru practically beamed and planted a soft kiss on the other's chin. "And it's so much more comfortable than being trapped inside of one of those trains during rush-hour. How does one become an angel?" Of course he somehow knew the answer, but was feeling like joking.

"You need to send in an application." Die chuckled, winking happily at the other. "And one more plus; flying, it takes less than half the time than it takes by train."

"As soon as we're home, I will apply to become an angel too." The rest of the flight went by in silence since Kaoru was just relishing the sight when Die went down a bit, not flying that high anymore. He knew that it was dangerous and that he would get into troubles if people saw them, but he couldn't have cared less.

Die was even a bit disappointed when the journey was over and he landed on the roof of the building where they lived. "So how did you like it?" He smiled brightly, not able to resist to kiss his lover tenderly.

Instead of replying instantly, Kaoru only wrapped his arms around the other's neck and deepened the kiss, smiling into it even. "Loved it." He breathed out after they had parted. "You're hired."

"Good then. But how about the hot bath now?" The redhead was even a bit tired after the long journey.

"Just pack your wings back to where they came from and then we can talk about a hot bath and a massage," the other offered generously. He had almost forgotten the young man they had visited that day, but when they went back inside, he remembered him and he asked himself if that poor guy knew love and carelessness like he did. But he shrugged the thought off quickly, not wanting it to spoil his now good mood.

They took a long, hot shower together, enjoying it to the fullest as they were able to be alone just the two of them. They both even managed to push back the unpleasant thoughts that the mere word 'mission' now brought to their minds.

Afterwards, Kaoru took the redhead's hand and practically pushed him on the bed, face down. But instead of the things the angel would've expected, he just gave him the promised massage, laughing evilly about the other's reaction to it. Eventually the massage relaxed Die though, and he enjoyed the feeling of the human's warm hands on his skin. He had needed it, even though he only noticed it then.

Content with his work, Kaoru lay down beside his lover, crawling close. "Enjoyed it?" He was grinning widely and managed to look wicked indeed.

"I did. Although I know something else I would've enjoyed too." The angel grinned brightly, tilting his head to look the other in the eye.

"Like a cold drink?" The black-haired asked innocently, looking as if butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. "If that's it, you can be helped."

"Well, that wasn't what I meant to be honest." Die just winked, before closing his eyes and not moving a muscle.

Chuckling softly, Kaoru pillowed his head on his lover's upper arm and tried to sneak a peek at the other's face. "You need to be more explicit with your wishes then."

"Explicit?" The redhead didn't move, nor opened his eyes. "But I'm an angel. Sweet and innocent. I wouldn't know what to ask for."

"You might be an angel, but when it comes to your mind, it's as dirty as a mine-worker's clothes." Kaoru had tilted his head so that he was speaking directly to the other's ear and couldn't resist to lick the earlobe with his tongue, finally taking it between his teeth.

It caused a grin to appear on Die's face. "I won't admit anything. I'm innocent." He was still lying completely still on his belly, utterly relaxed.

"You're stubborn on top of being naughty." Laughing a bit, Kaoru closed his eyes as well, stopping his advances and just snuggling up to the angel.

Truth to be told, Die was just content as he was close to the other man, and enjoyed the cuddling to no end. Finally moving, he reached out his arm to wrap it around his lover. "I know I'm stubborn. So are you."

"The perfect match." Smiling, Kaoru leaned into the embrace. Actually, he was quite exhausted from the stressful day, if only mostly mentally though. When he now closed his eyes, he felt the certain leaden heaviness spread into his limbs that predicted sleep would win over soon.

Reaching somewhere to the side Die grabbed the blanket, spreading it over them and kissing the other's temple softly. "Good night."
