If Kyuhyun is honest with himself, he knows he probably shouldn’t have tried to climb the almost vertical stone wall. A shortcut is always a shortcut but then again, maybe it would’ve been better to spend a little more time on the walk. He’s not going to be of much use to anyone if he bashes the back of his head in, he thinks within the split second as he falls, crashing hard against the rocks below. Searing pain slashes through him and for a moment all air escapes his lungs, his consciousness threatening to give in until the blackness fades, only lingers on the edges of his vision. It passes by surprisingly fast, though, and to his immense relief he realizes that he’s still mostly intact. He’s going to have bruises all over and it’ll hurt like mad, but for now it seems nothing is torn and bloody or impaled on anything. Kyuhyun already thinks he got out of it with sheer dumb luck, but then he tries to move his leg and it makes the pain flare up again. He forces in a laborious breath as he sits up, carefully but stubbornly, trying to examine the damage. It seems that he somehow managed to land on his left leg as he fell, and it’s pretty obvious it’s completely splintered. It’s bent, the bone sticking out through skin and he grimaces at the sight before promptly throwing up in his lap. Gross, he thinks as he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, so very gross. It’s not long after when Kyuhyun is carried back to his companions, straight towards one of the smaller tents in the back of the camp. It differs from all the other tents in the ornaments and careful sigils painted or burned all over it, and most of them cannot even enter it without permission. Thankfully Sungmin is one of the trusted ones, and he almost too easily hauls Kyuhyun inside even when Donghae and Kangin have to let go and stay outside. “Zhou Mi?” Sungmin calls out, as he not-very-gently drops Kyuhyun onto the rugs on the ground. “I hope you’re not tired since this idiot needs attendance, as soon as possible.” Kyuhyun barely has the time to even grumble at the choice of words before he’s cut off by a worried voice. “What have you been up to?” Zhou Mi more sighs than asks, and it doesn’t really seem to require an answer. “Thank you, Sungmin. I’ll find you if I need you,” he smiles, friendly but clearly dismissive and Sungmin doesn’t need to be told twice, he gets the hint. He pats Zhou Mi’s shoulder and turns around, the lapels of the tent swishing as he marches outside. They all know that Zhou Mi doesn’t really like having an audience when he’s healing. It’s not only about the possible distractions that having more people around brings, but also a personal preference. Healing always takes a lot of energy from him and he doesn’t think it’s for show. It’s a bare necessity, nothing to boast about. “You realize that this is the third time this summer?” Zhou Mi asks, the sweet smile turning into something sharper, teasing, as he slowly cuts off the fabric from around the wound with his knife. He’s always careful, always makes sure to be gentle, but there’s not even a hint of nervousness as he knows what he’s doing. “I thought you learned your lesson when I had to heal three ribs for you.” “It was a shortcut,” Kyuhyun mumbles petulantly, refusing to meet Zhou Mi’s eyes. “I didn’t mean to.” “I know,” Zhou Mi allows, amused, holding the leg still with a firm grip as he tries to wash some of the excess blood off with lukewarm water. It hurts, and it’s not exactly even that helpful seeing that the wounds are still bleeding, but Kyuhyun only grits his teeth through it and waits. “You’re not a child anymore,” Zhou Mi says after a second, “you could stop getting hurt like one.” There’s really no answer to that. Kyuhyun leans back against the rugs and allows his eyes to slide shut, expects the flash of pain as Zhou Mi forces the leg back into its shape. He screams, but it dies down as soon as the ends of the splintered bone touch and it feels like his whole leg is enveloped by intense warmth. It still hurts as the cells begin to merge, as the blood flow slowly comes to a halt, but it’s a lot more bearable. Kyuhyun knows from experience how the whole process looks like. Even with his eyes closed he can imagine the way Zhou Mi looks right now, face scrunched up in concentration and his lips parted as he breathes out vowels that don’t even sound like a language. There’s always a soft glow around him as he heals, similar to the faint light the moon casts upon them on clear nights. Yet the most memorable, the most noticeable, thing about the healing is the warmth. It’s like the tissue is burning as it knits together to fight the injury. It feels like days have passed when Zhou Mi finally rests his large palms on the renewed skin on Kyuhyun’s leg, stroking softly with his thumb. Kyuhyun shifts, reaches out and loops his arms around Zhou Mi’s bony shoulders to pull him down next to him. Healing makes Zhou Mi tired, makes him vulnerable and shaky, and it’s Kyuhyun’s turn to be strong now. Feeling safe, Zhou Mi passes out almost instantly, his breaths deep and even as he lets sleep claim him. Kyuhyun stays awake, watches over him, even though his eyelids feel heavy as lead and make him want to spend the rest of the summer not moving an inch. His leg still aches, but the phantom pains will go away soon enough. Everything is fixed now, all he has to do is wait for his body to regain its strength. Having Zhou Mi with them has been a blessing to their group more than once, but Kyuhyun knows he’s the luckiest one of them all. He’s the only one who gets this, who gets to share Zhou Mi’s space with him, and inwardly he promises he will stop getting hurt, stop making Zhou Mi worry. If he can. Three days later, Kyuhyun accidentally burns his fingers as he tries to pass on a pot full of boiling water over the beginnings of their bonfire. He flinches back and tries to act like nothing happened, but he should’ve known better than to assume that Zhou Mi didn’t notice. His wrist is caught immediately, his hand pulled close to Zhou Mi’s grin. “You know, you totally should always keep me around,” Zhou Mi points out, eyes sparkling in the light of the bonfire. He places a soft kiss on the burnt skin. It immediately stops stinging, but Zhou Mi keeps smiling against Kyuhyun’s fingers and that alone is enough to make Kyuhyun’s world narrow down into this, into them. He doesn’t say anything, only huffs at the cheesy words, even if a bit belatedly. They both know that he’s secretly enjoying the night anyway, even if he’d never admit he finds it enchanting. As Zhou Mi drops their hands, Kyuhyun uses the moment to twine their fingers and squeeze. It’s his promise. |
